Cagou (stamp)
The Cagou ( Rhynochetos jubatus ) appeared on several series of postage stamps of everyday usage of the New Caledonia. Since the beginning of the years 1980, the appearances of the cagou on the stamps of New Caledonia are very regular.
Fiftieth anniversary of the annexation
In 1903, for the fiftieth anniversary of the annexation of the archipelago by the France, the stamps with the Type Group use since 1892 are overloaded of a cagou. The overload is red. A variety is known: the disappearance of the I of “FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY”.
Series of everyday usage
First series of 1905
In 1905, a new series of everyday usage is emitted with three types specific to New Caledonia: “Cagou” for the low values, “Splits of Noumea” and “Sailing ships” for strongest. The cagou surrounded by grass and streamers being marked of country (“French Republic - Stations - New Caledonia and Dépendances”. The stamps is re-emitted regularly, including with overload to modify the facial value, until 1927.The drawing is H. Vollet and the stamps are engraved in Typographie by J. Puyplat.
In 1915, at the beginning of the First World War, as in France, a stock of 10 centimes pink is overloaded in red of a surtax with the profit of the Croix-Rouge. If the overload were added in New Caledonia, it is it in the form “+ 5” and “NCE” in diagonal. If it is an addition carried out in Paris, appears a “+5c” in top on the right of the stamp.
Free France
In 1943, the cagou reappears during the Second world war on a stamp of large size drawn by Edmond Dulac and printed in Héliogravure with London. It relays stocks of stamps of the years 1928 to 1939 overloaded “free France” in 1941.The series represents a cagou in flight above a landscape suggested, and surrounded of the symbols of free France: initial “RF” and Cross of Lorraine. It is useful until after 1945 when it is overloaded new values.
Series of 1948
In 1948, an everyday usage of large size and emitted in three values representing in a realistic way two “kagous”. They are drawn by Jule Douy.
The Forget type of 1985
In 1985, Pierre Forget draws and serious in Taille-douce a cagou upright, folded up wings. In 1988, he knows the modification of the mention which passes from “New Caledonia and dependences” to “New Caledonia”.
The Coatantiec type of 1990
In 1990, the cagou appears in its natural state, nozzle and leg ahead like if advancing. This type completely replaces that of 1985 during the emission of small auxiliary values in 1991. This type is the first of New Caledonia to know an emission in notebook of self-adhesive stamps.The drawing and engraving in Taille-douce are due to Raymond Coatantiec.
The Lisiak type of 1997
The Lisiak type shows, in 1997, the animal, wings deployed and the head of profile compared to the reader. In its feathers, are distinguished the New Caledonia and the islands Loyauté.This stamp is drawn by Jean-Richard Lisiak and is engraved in Taille-douce by André Lavergne.
The Lavergne type of 2003
The Lavergne type is illustrated of a cagou being held well right, the head and the chest only visible. From clear color, it is distinguished on a bottom from color.This stamp is drawn and engraved in Taille-douce by André Lavergne. It is of since February 2003 use. However, in 2003 to provide vending machines and 2006 because of a change of tariffs, two values with the Lavergne type continued to be useful, respectively the self-adhesive Timbre with red permanent value with side corrugated serration and the 100 francs peaceful blue overloaded “+10F”.
Commemorative stamps
The first stamps of New Caledonia gave place to emissions commemorative pointing out the emission of 1905:- in 1960, one of the six stamps of the series of the centenary of the Post office in the territory takes again the Triquérat and the cagou of 1905 above a sight of Port-of-France in 1859,
The image of the cagou was used to promote the Philatélie:
- the philatelic Club Cagou is the object of two emissions in 1985 with a cagou observing a stamp with the magnifying glass and with a block of stamps on stamps in 2007.
- in 1990 on a stamp of Airmail, it faces a kiwi New Zealand for the philatelic exposure of Auckland,
- in 1993, a drawing of famous child of a cagou the emission “Philately at the school. Tourist, my friend”.
In 1992, the cagou is accompanied by a crane for the centenary of the immigration of the first Japanese in New Caledonia.
Species in the process of disappearance, the cagou is the object of a series of four stamps by Nick Shewring in 1998, within the framework of an emission supported by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), like in the series of the Birdlife International of 2007 drawn by Laurence Ramon.
Others
In 1984, stylized, the cagou appears on the blazon of New Caledonia.In 2000, in the form of cartoons, it is put in scene on three stamps of wish of Jean-Richard Lisiak for a birth, the holidays or to address wishes of happiness.
