Cafayate
Cafayate is a small town of the valleys known as Calchaquíes, located at the south of the province of Salta, in Argentine, and built with 1683 Mr. of altitude. It is the chief town of the Département of Cafayate and an important tourist city, very known for the excellent quality of its wines. Its population is of 10.322 inhabitants.
History
The locality was founded in 1840 by a colonel of the army, which carried out a wish of his/her mother to offer a sanctuary in this place to the Virgin of the Rosary. Gradually the importance of the city increased, and one came from there to create a department in 1863. The city is today the seat of one évêché catholic.
Tourism
The area is famous for its vineyards, its excellent Vin S and its bodegas. One cultivates a Raisin there type Torrontés . The small town is an attraction in oneself, with its atmosphere, its style colonial and the hollow with wine opened with the public.
Calchaquíes valleys
Today the city is with Tafí del Valle most important within the traditional tourist tour of the Vallées Calchaquies.
The most impressive sights in the valley of the tired Río Conchas (or Quebrada de Cafayate) are throughout the road RN 68, of 183 km, which goes from Salta to Cafayate. RN 40 of 165 km. lead to the north of Cafayate to Cachi del Valle, another destination the most visited of in the area. Towards the south, this same road leads to the very beautiful town of Santa María, already in province of Catamarca.
Always in these valleys, one can also visit in the neighborhoods of Cafayate the ranchos Molinos, Tolombón and San Isidro.
Wines

In the province of Salta, the most important production of wine is initially around Cafayate in Quebrada de Cafayate, then around Tafí del Valle. The wines produced in these areas bénéficent small percentage of moisture of the air of the valleys, which receive on average less than 250 millimetres of precipitation per annum. The type of the wine most characteristic of the soil is containing grape Torrontés and it is white.
