Biography
Fifth of the seven children of Jose Such Veloso (called " Seu Zezinho") and of Claudionor Vianna Such Veloso (" Gave Canö), it was born with Santo Amaro da Purificação, in the State of Bahia. It chooses the first name of his little sister (sixth child of the family), Maria Bethânia, according to a famous song of the time of Nelson Gonçalves. Besides her sister, singer it also, preceded it in the celebrity in the Années 1960.It began its career by singing Bossa nova and quoted besides like its greater influences of the time João Gilberto and Dorival Caymmi. (João Gilberto will say besides later in connection with the contribution of Caetano to the Brazilian music: “it added a intellectual dimension to the Brazilian popular music” .) However with the influence of the Beatles, its collaborations with Gilberto Gil, Gall Costa, Tom Zé, Chico Buarque and Os Mutant led to the Tropicalisme, which interferes the pop Brazilian one with the rock'n'roll & roll and of the music avant-garde, with for result a more international, psychedelic and socially committed sound. The political positioning of Veloso, resolutely on the left, was worth many troubles with the military junta to him which controlled the Brésil until in 1985. Its songs were frequently censured and some prohibited. Veloso was also put at the variation of the Brazilian socialist left because of its musical influences “not main roads” (like the rock'n'roll & roll). Veloso and Gilberto Gil spent several months in prison for “antigovernment activities” in 1968 and even had to be exiled with London. The work of Veloso after its return to the Brésil in 1972 was characterized by constant appropriations, not only of foreign styles, but also of Brazilian styles and folk rates/rhythms with half forgotten. In particular, the celebration of the culture Brazilian Negro of Bahia which can be seen like the precursor of a group afro-centric like Timbalada.
In the Years 1980, the popularity of Veloso increased outside the Brésil, particularly in Israel, with the Portugal and in France. In 2002 Veloso left a book over its first years and the Tropicalisme, Tropical Truth: In Story off Music and Revolution in Brazil . In 2006, it one of the pop-stars international is respected and prolific, with more than 50 recordings available and of the participations in film original soundtracks like Frida .
Its first album entirely in English ( has Foreign Sound ) left in 2004, it includes/understands a resumption of " As ace you are" of Nirvana.
