Caesarodunum

As of the Gallic time, Caesarodunum was important as a crossing point of the the Loire. Placed under the Roman authority, at the 1st century apr. J. - C., the city named “Caesaro dunum” (“hill of César”), the name evolved/moved at the 4th century by joining that of the tribe of the Gaulois present on the site, the Turones , to be called “Civitas Turonorum” then “Tours”. It is of this time that date the Amphithéâtre of Turns, one of five larger of the Empire. Turns becomes the metropolis of the Roman province of Lyons third towards 380 - 388, dominating the valley of the the Loire, the Maine and the Brittany.
