Cadurques

The Cadurques ( Cadurci ) was one of the Gallic Peuples, they gave their name to the Quercy and the town of Cahors (Divona cadurcorum). Their territory was to extend on current the Quercy, no document does not inform us about the extent of their territory.

Origin of Cadurques

They from Germany by migration, of VIIe to the Life front S.J.C. They were essential by the weapons on the preexistent populations.

The origin of the name could come from cad-but-Ci , " those which live on the edges of beautiful a rivière" , undoubtedly the Batch.

Gallic times

Cadurques seem to have abolished the royalty, the capacity being between the hands of the land aristocracy.

At the end of IIe S. and during Ier front S.J.C., the Oppidum S take an important place. Indeed as of the end of IIe S., the disorders accumulate at the borders. Conflicts oppose the Romans with the Arvernes (demolished of Bituit into 121). In 118, Rome subjects the Volques Tectosages. In 109, the Cimbres break of the Rhone to the Of Bordeaux one. In 58 av. J.C., the intervention of Jules César in Gaulle begins.

Cadurques strengthened or reinvested oppidums such that of Uxellodunum. In the event of danger the population could be accommodated with its cattle, the oppidums being able to reach a surface of several tens of hectares. A sedentary population, more or less many, was to live there permanently.

These fortified towns were centers of exchanges. Amphoras containing of the wines of Italy, of the Gallic coins coming from all Gaulle were found there. These fortified positions were deserted after the Roman conquest.

At the same time, Cadurques will emit silver coins of which some will be spread in all the south-west of Gaulle.

The Roman conquest

In its work " Commentarii of bello gallico" , " The war of Gaules" , Jules César (and the Hirtius historiographer) tell the seat of the Oppidum of Uxellodunum, fortified town belonging to Cadurques, whose catch marked the end of the Guerre of Gaules in 52 av. J. - C., but whose precise geographical position remains prone to discussion. (Last research would locate it at Puy-in Issolud, in the Batch. Other places were considered in the Lot: Luzech, Murcens, Capdenac…) This tribe of Cadurques was very close to the Arvernes, their chief Lucterius (Lucterios) was faithful combined Vercingétorix in its fight against Jules César. One year after the rendering of Vercingétorix to Alésia, Lucterius and Drappès Sénon (of Direction) take refuge in the Oppidum of Uxellodunum to continue the fight there. Vainly. Overcome, Lucterius seeks refuge in the chief Arverne Epasnactos, who delivers it to César.

It should be noted that this stubborn chief - the Gallic last resisting the Roman invader will inspire at the 20th century Astérix and Abraracourcix, characters famous of the work of Goscinny and Uderzo.
