Cadfael brother
Frère Cadfael /ˈkad.vail/(of its true name Cadfael ap Meilyr ap Dafydd ) is a character of fiction, monk Benedictine Welsh and old cross, hero of twenty detective novels and three police news Britannique S written by Ellis Peters (with the civilian Edith Pargeter).
The character
Frère Cadfael entered the orders on his return of crusade, at an already advanced age for the time (more than 50 years). He occupies the function of herbalist within the abbey and also acts as doctor, thanks to his long experience of the wounds of war, experiment which also enabled him to bring back, within his Herbarium, of the unknown plants then in England, the such Pavot.
Its long experience of the century makes him interpret in a rather personal way the Règle of Saint Benoit. That causes at its corréligionnaires admiration, curiosity, fear or jealousy, but also, at some, of confidence. That is worth to him inter alia regularly the lightnings of the Prieur of the abbey (and of its sub-prior), but also the total confidence of the Radulfe abbot, who very often grants the right to him to miss the religious offices for the needs for an investigation. The abbot of the monastery is indeed, like Frère Cadfael itself, strongly impregnated of the direction of justice.
Its principal allies are Hugh Beringar, sheriff of the county of Shropshire, like its various assistants, who change with the wire of the novels.
Become monk on late, Frère Cadfael was not without meeting women. One of them even gave him a son, whom it will meet by chance in one of his adventures.
Tally historical and geographical
Frère Cadfael lives at disturbed times of the civil war between Etienne of Blois and Mathilde Emperesse for the throne of England at the 12th century. His/her best friend and confidant, Hugh Beringar, are a partisan of Etienne, but Cadfael helps indifferently the allies of one or the other camp
The abbey of Shrewsbury really exists, it has even a Web site (its true name is abbey of Saint Pierre and Saint Paul ). The town of Shrewsbury is quite real also: it is located in the county of the Shropshire, at the border of the Wales. Frère Cadfael is Welsh him besides even (originating in Trefriw more precisely, and he thus speaks Welsh usually), which plays a sometimes important part in certain novels.
The abbey is also really the residence of the remainders of Sainte Winifred. Edith Pargeter gives a rather original interpretation of this history in Trafic of relics .
