“The capacity of the ruins and the stones exerts on the human spirit of the phantasms and reality that all one must oneself. ” H' CILOCIN
And I add that reality is also not to lose the history of last to condemn itself to the darkness. This is why in this 3rd shutter of the “fragments of Caderousse”, I propose to you a guided visit of the Parish church and his vault Saint Claude, called between the XVIII and the XIX century, Chapelle of Mister (Moussu into of Provence). This historical chronology, ignored, I owe it with Mr PARISET, general conservative of the Media library from France to Paris which agreed to provide me a synthesis of it; that he is thanked here for it.
Historical background of this visit These two monuments built by stages were private buildings which belonged to the Lord of Ancezune, whose house is installed in Caderousse since the year 1080 according to the sources of Armorial of Provence. The Church was transferred to the clergy in 1464 and the Vault was returned to the community of the city in 1802. The safeguard of this inheritance was carried out during the centuries by the elected officials at the price of enormous financial sacrifices, this is why, it deserves protection and curiosity.
Protection Classified by the Art schools, its destination is that of the catholic worship but without possibility of modification of its architectural structures and decorative additions. The Church forms a whole of the Romanesque art and Gothic art and must keep a stripped aspect (according to the wish of Bernard de Clairvaux). As for the vault Saint Claude (of Moussu) it is of Gothic style blazing, single in Provence and its esthetic character must be protected “AD vitam aeternam”.
Curiosity These two buildings of the Middle Ages are to be integrated in our general culture as well as the history of our city twice thousand-year-old which, I point out it was fore-mentioned “the little sister” of Avignon for her shelter of protection (the dam). Visit It begins Place of the Church. There is 1.000 years this place was deserted; nothing in the south in the east and the west. On this date, Clunysiens dominate the monastic world and the Church adapted all the fees registration. In 1800, on seen communal records (disappeared today) the Berbiguier Abbot, priest of Caderousse written in his memories: “Saint Michel existed in its XII century since one finds before this date of the acts of property of close houses at which one locates it at midday (southern), in 1532)”.
Let us penetrate in the church
Let us place owe the furnace bridge.
From this point of view, the two figures represent the ruins of the temple of Apollo who was demolished in Vè century. The ruin materialized in n°1 constitutes the base of the five blind arcades. The ruin n°2 form the pillar of right-hand side. It separates the Chorus from the Vault Saint-Claude, it is also used as base plate right of the bell-tower and these two elements form the base of the religious building.
Course of the Church
Small vault with a span, its construction goes up fine 11th century. Its dimension accounted for the 1/3 of the current church which one sees the nave
By outdatedness, the nave collapsed towards.
the church of Saint-Michel (13th century)
This plan configures the real identity of the first church of Caderousse. It is not in the shape of cross Latin (what was not obligatory), slightly smaller, it does not have side chapels. The old arcs appear in shifted. The unit is of structure simple and of each with dimensions of the spans of the openings of opening let pass the light. The Furnace bridge is close to the blind arcades, it was out of marble. The bell-tower is located at the top of the Chorus. The Blanc abbot notes about this building, that it was destroyed by a fire at the 13th century. It was dedicated to Saint-Michel the Archangel.
As for the cemeteries, that intramurally being in the east of the church, the transfers of the bones and plates funeral were undertaken between 1862 and 1863 towards the second located close to extra-muros the Saint Martin's day vault. Other bones were found into 1984/1985, during the restoration of this place of worship and were joined together in a square in the second cemetery.
the rebuilt church and the vault of Ancezune
It was rebuilt fine - beginning 15th century. The files of the Calvet museum reveal:
- a pious legacy for the work of the bell-tower on October 11th, 1403,
- a loan of 25 guilders to complete the construction of the bell-tower on April 22nd, 1404,
it repair of the nave by Imbert Not, lapidary (Master-mason) between 1436 and 1446.
The spans are broader, one sees the old arches reconstituted on this diagram by a feature. This enlarging was founded on a study to open out its acoustics, compared to the dome which is higher and the reversed roof in the shape of “V”. The furnace bridge always placed at the bottom of the chorus, was crowned of a retable of high value, it represented: - Our lady of pity with the apostles and on gold bottom the Holy Father surrounded by stars.
The files of Paris announce the presence of another retable which existed in 1452. These two works disappeared. The style of this construction is Roman by its blind arcades and Gothic by its triumphal arch supporting the Romance cap. This church was entirely renovated on the councils of the architects of the Art schools and the Monuments of France as well as person in charge of Sacred art of the Diocese of Avignon in 1985. Previously it was the object of multiple interior modifications! For example: it first platform was built with the top of the Furnace bridge and was destroyed to be built close to the main entrance with an access located close to the small door. The pulpit was on your left joined on the second pillar.
it March 13rd, 1509, the current bell-tower is rebuilt
it April 9th, 1511, the six bays are arranged to receive the bells
it April 30th, 1563, the bells, finally melted, is installed
- From 1606, TULLE Monseigneur settles in Caderousse after his resignation of Orange Bishop and assembles each day to the bell-tower of Saint Michel and while turning itself to North will say during 17 years, “per visu” by speaking about its abandoned church
- At the XIX century the decayed bells are dismounted and on March 29th, 1913, the large bell and its leaf fall to the foot from Simon, the bell ringer without wounding it
it February 25th, 1997, the six bells offered by the archbishop's palace and the community of the parishioners started to tinkle under the expert hands of Jean-Bernard Lemoine. They accepted the blessing of Monseigneur Bouchex, on December 14th, 1997.
Registered on the list of the inheritance this bell-tower is one of most beautiful region, and the bells symbolize “the virtue for the life”. To finish this chapter, the vault which appears on the plan, above, is that of powerful Seigneur Anthoine d' Ancezune which made it raise between 1448 and 1458 to receive its burial there and that of the members of his family. To build it, it was necessary to open the side wall right, the Arc is of this date and the secondary pillar carries the heights of the floods:
- aqua 1471
- aqua 1530
- aqua 1538
- Nov. 30, 1735
She had only one simple span of origin, she is the counterpart (height - width - depth and cross) of that which is in opposite (Chassenatico and Maréchal). She was demolished by her son ( to see chapter Chapelle Saint Claude )
the Vault of Chassenatico and Maréchal
This vault is on the left from this point of view. It is on June 18th, 1478 that these two owners order at “price made” of 400 guilders its construction. Its characteristics were those of the Vault Saint-Claude with an intersecting ribs. The northern wall of the Church was opened by the master masons François Moselli, Guillaume Poys, of the Orange country. The receipt was paid on February 18th, 1491.
