Cadel Evans , born the February 14th 1977 in Catherine, is a Australian cyclist professional. Old runner of VTT of foreground (victorious of the world cup twice), it converted successfully with cycling on road. At the same time good climbing and wheeler, it gained the Tour of Romandie in 2006, was classified 2nd Tour de France 2007 and gained the Pro Turn the same year.
Biography
Cadel Evans initially was a runner of VTT. Member of the team Volvo Cannondale MTB, it gained the world cup of VTT in 1998 and 1999. With the Olympic Games of summer of 2000, it finished 7th test of VTT.After having been trainee within the team of cycling on road Saeco in 1999, it signs a first professional contract with this same team for the season 2001. It is shown with its advantage as of this first year: it gains Brixia Tour and the Tour of Austria. Good climbing, it is essential on it on the Kitzbüheler Horn.
It is then recruited by the team Mapei. Already author of one 10th on Paris-Nice, during which it had been classified second on arrival with the Collar of Èze, the great revelation of his talent intervenes at the time of the Tour of Italy. Placed well after the against-the-watch of 14th where it is beaten only by Tyler Hamilton and Serhiy Honchar, it seizes the pink shirt of leader two stages later, after the first stage of the Dolomites. The following day is however much more difficult: finishing the final ascencion with more than one fifteen minutes of the leaders, it yields the shirt to Paolo Savoldelli. It completes this Giro in the 14th place.
In 2003, it passes to T-Mobile. It is long in confirming its potential there, and gains only the Turn of Austria in 2004. The Belgian team Davitamon-Lotto engages it in 2005. Evans obtains at the beginning of season of good places of honor on the traditional of the Ardennes ones, and especially on the stage races like Paris-Nice (8th), the Tour of Switzerland (15th) or later the Tour of Germany (5th) during which it gains a stage at the top of the Feldberg. Especially, for its first participation in the Tour de France, it shows regularity in the stages of mountain and the against-the-watch, and finishes 8th in Paris, “succeeding” Phil Anderson, the last Australian having carried out a Signal 10 on the Tour de France.
In 2006, Evans gains what remains its principal victory to date: the Turn of Romandie. Whereas Alberto Contador was leader of general classification, it gains the last run stage against-the-watch and seizes the 1st place. It improves its place with the Tour de France while being classified 4th. It also finishes 2nd Tour of Poland.
Leader of its team, become Predictor-Lotto, for the stage races, Cadel Evans beginning the year 2007 by stage races which it already disputed the previous years (Paris-Nice, Tour of the Basque Country, Tour of Romandie) and shows himself there with his advantage. In June, it is placed 2nd of the Critérium of Dauphine released, at only 14 seconds of Christophe Moreau. Announced like one of the favorites of the Tour de France, it finishes second of the against-the-watch of the 13th stage, behind Alexandre Vinokourov which will be, a few days, convinced later of doping. Regular on the stages of mountain, he is once again second, this time derrirère Levi Leipheimer, at the time of the second against-the-watch, the day before the arrival to the Fields-Élysées. This performance enables him to preserve its second place on the final podium, at only 23 seconds of the winner Alberto Contador.
In September, it takes part in the Tour of Spain. Less with its ease that on the Tour de France, it is nevertheless 2nd of stage with Arcalis in the Pyrenees, beaten with the sprint by the winner Denis Menchov, then with Avila, beating this time the favorites with the sprint. It finishes the test in the 4th place of general classification, at 10 seconds of a place on the podium. The many places of honors glanées during the season, as well as the ousting of Danilo Di Luca following its suspension, enable him to succeed Alejandro Valverde by gaining the ProTour 2007.
