Cacouna
Cacouna is a municipality of the Quebec located in the regional Municipalité of county of River-of-Wolf and in the administrative area of the Low-Saint-Laurent. It is located at approximately 225 km in the East of the town of Quebec. The municipality of Cacouna was created by fusion between the village of Saint-Georges-with-Cacouna and the parish of Saint-Georges-with-Cacouna in March 2006.
This small community is recognized for its splendid sunsets and its historical architectural heritage.
With its some 1.800 inhabitants, Cacouna has besides a residential seal which is characterized by quality from its built framework, which account of many residences indicating a single architectural heritage. Moreover, the agricultural life very active and is also diversified there. An important deep water port, the port the Largeone, represents a major asset for the future development of the area.
Cacouna is also a Indian Réserve of the Québécois Nation Malécite , located in the administrative area of the Low-Saint-Laurent.
History
Since 1721 the territory of Cacouna is occupied by some families. About 1765, several Acadiens settles there in squatters. The mission which gave its name to the municipality founded about 1798 and was set up canonically in 1835.
A municipality created in 1845 and abolished in 1847 bore the name “Kakonna”. In 1855, is created the municipality of the parish of “Saint-Georges-of-Kakouna”.
It is in addition about the birthplace of Mario Dumont.
Toponymy
The majority of the authors saw in the toponym “Cacouna” the words cries, kakwa or kakoua having for direction porcupine and NAK, remains of, from where remains porcupine. The localization of the toponym makes however this interpretation doubtful, the Cris not having never attended this area. The Montagnais, them, could have established to with it this toponym at the time of one of their occasional crossings of the St. Lawrence, at old times. The word kaku means also porcupine in their language. More surely however, it could be a question of a word Malécite, kakona, which one finds translated by tortoise in a work of 1832. The name “Saint-Georges” was retained by monseigneur Plessis, in 1809, at the request of Malcolm Fraser, lord of Murray Bay (Malbaie) of 1733 to 1815. The English people have as an owner holy Georges, officer martyrized in Palestine towards 303. Its combat against the dragon was the subject of multiple representations in Article.

Cacouna energy
A project discussed of terminal methane tanker on the site of the port the Largeone is currently at the stage of the environmental evaluations. The promoter of the project is Énergie Cacouna , a formed consortium of the companies Transcanada Pipelines and Pétro-Canada. According to the scenario presented, liquefied natural gas would be imported of Russia until Large-Cacouna where it would be gasified then distributed on the North-American market via a gas pipeline to build.
The joint Board of examiners formed of the office of public sittings on the environment and of the Canadian Agency of environmental evaluation submitted his report on November 1st, 2006. This commission concludes that the project is not likely to cause important environmental effects if the measures of attenuation and the recommendations which it subjects are taken by the promoter.
