History

Preamble

The commune of Cachan exists only since 1923. It was a hamlet before then a rather middle-class and rural district of the industrial commune of Arcueil.

The April 27th 1894, the name of Cachan is assistant of that of Arcueil to form Arcueil-Cachan. In the course of time, however, the two communes start to be affirmed independently. In 1902, a decision of the municipal council to establish a new school with Arcueil - which counted already several schools, whereas Cachan did not have that a nursery school - starts a protest movement of the citizens of the commune which culminates in 1911 in a petition claiming the separation of with Arcueil.
Cachan became a middle-class city while Arcueil became populated workmen and elected a communist majority.

The December 21st 1921, the general advice of the the Seine gives an favorable opinion and the December 26th 1922, the Parliament votes the law ratifying the creation of Cachan.

Two fountains and the name of a district evoke time when the poets of the Pléiade (XVIe century) attend the valley, attracted by the bathes in the Bièvre, the wine and melons. Certain archeologists think that there would be in Cachan an old palate of the kings of France of the time of the Mérovingiens.

Anecdotiquement, it seems that Cachan was the starting point of the joke of the pink letter-boxes which was spread in Montmartre.

The business of the “squatters” of Cachan

The building was then unused in the sight of a forthcoming demolition in order to rebuild a “wooded car park”.

The people finding itself in the street in spite of a proposal for one month a rehousing, the mayor of Cachan wished exceptionally to alleviate the things by rehousing them in the gymnasium of a school. The business is all the more complex as they wish to be rehoused in the same place.

The file became complicated recently with the arrival with the gymnasium of other people without relationship with the “squatters of Cachan”.

The prefecture announced that it would limit its offers of rehousing to 102 families is approximately 220 people, but the town hall listed 516 occupants in the gymnasium.
