Cabu is the pseudonym of Jean Cabut , draftsman of Cartoon and caricaturist French born with Châlons-sur-Marne the January 13rd 1938.

Biography

It makes artistic studies with Paris (École Estienne) and publishes its first illustrations in 1954 in the Union of Rheims , regional newspaper. But its career is opposed by the Guerre of Algeria, it is mobilized during more than two years (27 months), it puts its competences at the service of the newspaper of the army the Village , based with Constantine and where sign also Philippe Labro and Francis Veber. It publishes there in particular the series the Girl of the colonel . It keeps this period a Antimilitarisme militant and a a little anarchistic vision of the company which it transposes in his drawings. Its character of the adjudant Kronenbourg is inspired by this période.
He also collaborates in Paris-Match during his military incorporation.

Demobilized, in 1960, it always draws in various newspapers, of which Mad the , transitory publication publishing only caricatures. It enters then to Hara-Kiri , created by Cavanna and Bernier (the Professor Choron), where it finds an environment which corresponds to its ideas and other draftsmen of talent: Gébé, Fred, Wolinski, Reiser… It also collaborates in the magazine Pilote starting from 1962. It is there that it creates its character fetish Large Duduche , lymphatic and awkward high-school pupil inspired by its memories of student, and that of the “Beauf” (inspired by Jacques Médecin or more probably by the manager of the bar the Alsatian one of Châlons-in-Champagne). He collaborates in Hara-Kiri hebdo, then after the prohibition of this one in 1970, with Charlie-Hebdo at a rate of two pages per week.

He meets a great success in years 70/80 and publishes many albums. It illustrated many books, and the small pocket of the 3rd album of Maxime the Forester entitled " Caricatures".

From September 2006 in January 2007, a exposure-homage Cabu and Paris takes place with the Town hall of Paris and of October 2006 in February 2007, the Media library Georges Pompidou de Champagne Chalons, its birthplace, devotes to him for the first time a retrospective. Documentary, Cabu, politically incorrect! , realized by Jerome Lambert and Philippe Picardy, was devoted to Cabu and was diffused on France 5 in September 2006.

Cabu is the father of the singer Mano Solo.
