Cabrières (Herault)

Cabrières is a common French, located in the department of the Herault and the area Languedoc-Roussillon. Its inhabitants is called the " Cabriérois".

Geography

History

The mines of Cuivre were worked in Antiquity. Traces of this exploitation still remain. The castle of Cabrières is quoted in the Histoire of the Francs of Gregoire de Tours. The old village was then built with the foot of this castle. During the War One hundred Year old, the truck drivers installed in the castle, and the valleys of Herault and Lergue (area of Lodève) held to ransom plundered by where the road passed towards the Rouergue.

The Wars of religion brought in their turn their batch of misery. The inhabitants then gave up the old village to be installed on the current site of Cabrières.

Economy

Cabrières is primarily an wine-producing area. The production obtained the classification AOC Coteaux of Languedoc. The type of vines are:

  • white: Bourboulenc, Carignan, Pale, Macabeu, Piquepoul, Terret and pink Ugni
  • : Grenache (10% at the most out of complementary type of vine)
  • black: Cinsaut (45% at least for the rosy wines and 40% at the most for the reds)
  • red: Carignan (40% at the most with obligatory presence of two other type of vines such as the lledoner pelut (in this case, together or separately 20% at least) or the grenache), mourvèdre and syrah (20% at least, each one or separately).

The whole of the type of vines grenache, lledoner pelut, mourvèdre and syrah must represent a minimum of 50% (type of vines complementary 10% at the most, counoise, piquepoul and terret).

  • Mine of copper of Pioch Farrus (5000 years), arranged for the visit. It is the oldest mine of France worth visiting.
  • Source of Estabel . It is an intermittent source, which runs only exceptionally (every 20 years on average), reaching a very important flow then.
  • Romance Church Saint Martin's day of Crozes of the 11th century which is classified historic building.
  • Peak of Vissou 480 m
  • museographic Flour-milling of Tiberet
  • Space with the vault of the vine growers
  • House of associations
