Cable underwater between the island of Man and England

The electric cable (in English Isle off Man to England Interconnector ) which connects Blackpool in England to Douglas on the island of Man is currently longest in the world to be transported under the sea of the Alternative course. Of a 115 km length, it was inaugurated in October 2000. With a tension of 90 Kv, it has a line capacity of 40 MW.

The cable since its opening made it possible to face the growth of the consumption of electricity (7 % per annum at the time of the years preceding its inauguration) and to avoid ruptures of provisioning of the island at the time of the peaks of consumption. The island was before dependant on old women thermo plants with the Fioul who pained to satisfy the request at the time of the peaks (up to 72 MW in 2000). Since the opening of the cable, one of the power stations to the fuel of a capacity of 30 MW was demolished and replaced in 2003 by a power station with the more modern gas of a capacity of 80 MW and which combined with the cable ensure the provisioning of the population and industries mannoises.
