CMA-CGM

CMA CGM , abbreviation of Maritime company of Freighting - Maritime General Company , is a maritime transport company and Armateur French chartering inter alia Navire S Porte-conteneurs.

History

The company is founded in 1976 by Jacques Saadé. In 1978, the first container ships of the company is chartered: the Town of the East .

In 1996, the Saadé brothers repurchase the maritime general Compagnie (CGM) at the French State for less than 20 franc million. The CGM had 1 then billion francs of liquidity and its full value was close to 2 billion francs, like revealed it in 1999 an agreement between the two brothers. By this privatization, CMA CGM became the fifth company of ocean freight of the world (first in France and Europe), it is directed today by Jacques Saadé.

In 2006, CMA CGM absorbs the Delmas propelling it to the 3rd world rank of container transport.

In addition to goods transport, CMA CGM has from now on a branch " Croisières". Indeed, since 2006 it is owner with 70% of the Company of the Islands of the West. This French Company, founded in 1987 in Nantes by several commercial Naval officers French since the summer 2006 is based in Marseilles, near the head office of CMA CGM. Three ships plow the seas and oceans: West, a sailing ship of 30 cabins, It Raising, a yacht of 45 cabins and Diamond a small steamer (former carrier become steamer of cruising), which has 110 cabins.

Performance

By buying Delmas, the CMA-CGM rose since January 1st, 2006 in the place of third world ship-owner behind Danish Maersk and italo-Switzerland MSC. Its 302 ships container ships, of which thirds in property, serve the containerized traffic of planet. They add up a transport capacity of more than 745.000 EVP (equivalent twenty feet) and a park of more than one million Conteneur S.

The CMA-CGM employs more than 11.500 people in the world, including 4.000 in France, and among which more than 500 French sailors and officers.

It diversifies in road transport, cruisings of luxury, the rail, the intermodal , and invests by means of its subsidiary company Terminal Link in the harbor container terminals, strategic link of the supply chain.

Head office

The head office of CMA CGM, created by Jacques Saadé, is located at Marseilles. The building which accommodates the buildings has an aquarium where turn of the sharks. It was inaugurated in November 2002. In 2006, a new tower of 65.000 m ² is in construction where it will accommodate the personnel. It of 33 stages (of approximately 147 m in height), will be conceived by Zaha Hadid with the walls curved, being fraying, will be composed of two buildings coupled and unified by a double wall of glass. It will have an opened panoramic restaurant amongst other things with the public, of a maritime museum, larger private aquarium of Europe, elevators at high speed (7m/s). The delivery is planned for the 3rd quarter 2009.
