CANARIE (network)

CANARIE is a Canadian organization , created in 1993, with nonlucrative goal supported by its members, its partners of project and the federal government, which deploys, exploits and makes evolve/move a telecommunication network with high banc which federates the provincial scientific networks and, by their mediation, the universities, the research institutes, the public laboratories, the schools as well as other acceptable sites. It also connects them to similar global area networks. The network is called CA*Net or CAnet .

General principle

CANARIE is a project carried out on the initiative of various universities and their industrial partners in the field of the networks and information technologies. In 2007, the consortium comprises 84 members, for the majority of the universities, of the research institutes and other establishments of higher education, like several companies of high technology as well as government agencies. The head office is located at Ottawa in the Ontario.

CANARIE maintains permanently the CAnet network with the last style by introducing there the very last technological improvements of the moment. CANARIE CAnet network a window for the scientific research in Canada thus aims at making, to provide to the Canadian researchers a means of cooperating more effectively on certain projects. It attracts and fidélise investors and industrial partners. It can recruit and maintain in station talented actors and personalities (operators of regional networks of research, personnel of governmental and enquiring laboratories) interested to put their joint means to have access to powerful and demanding applications in computer's resources.

History

The initial network " CAnet" in 1990 with the support of the National council for Research was created. CANARIE its modernization by stage realized, with the introduction of connections with 56 Kbit/s in 1993, of connections with 10Mbit/s in 1995, and thereafter with 20 Mbit/s. In 1996, the aggregate capacity passes to 100 Mbit/s and technology ATM is introduced within the framework of a project baptized " National Network" (NTN) Test;.

In 1997, the operator " Beautiful Advanced Communications" (known thereafter as Beautiful Nexxia, and currently a Bell Canada) received the mendat to exploit the network. The " project; CAnet II" was launched on the line capacities of bonds NTN, level OC-3 (155 Mbit/s) in heart of network.

In 1998, CANARIE deployed the network CA*Net 3, the first domestic network for the teaching and research based on Optical technologies Internet. The capacity of the network was to reach 40 Gbit/s.

The current version of the network is baptized " CAnet 4" , and rests in the majority of the cases on optical links of type OC-192 (10 Gb/s).

Last evolutions

CANARIE account to make evolve the network to the concept of the “network equipped by the user”, i.e. a network able to evolve/move in a very flexible way, with dynamic assignment of the resources according to the specific needs of the end-users (calculations distributed, to operate by remote control instruments of research, national and international co-operation,…)

In July 2007, CANARIE deployed in Colombia-British, Alberta, Ontario and with the Quebec of optic equipment " eROADM" (optical multiplexers of insertion-extraction reconfigurable). what increases the flexibility of the network and makes it possible to simplify the operational exploitation. CANARIE also deployed solutions WDM with functions " eDCO" (electronic Dynamically Compensating Optics), which facilitates the interconnection of the sites by increasing the range with more than 2.000 km, thus eliminating the need for having recourse to modules of compensation of dispersion and to related amplifiers. The new equipment uses technology CPL (Common Photonic Layer) Nortel.
