CAMWOOD ship

The CAMWOOD ship are ships British cargo liners used like Escorteur S at the time of the Second world war. 35 cargo liners were converted as from the summer 1941. These conversions were solutions of urgencies because of the shortage of Escort carrier.

“CAMWOOD” is the acronym of Catapult Aircraft Merchantman (“ship cargo liner with catapulted aircraft”). The CAMWOOD ship is equipped with a launching pad by catapults. This one propels a Hawker Sea Hurricane (called “Hurricat” or “Catafighter”). The ship was not designed to take delivery of the planes. Thus, the pilots were to make land on sea their plane and be fished out by a friendly ship.

The CAMWOOD ships had a determining role at the time of the convoyings in the Atlantique. They ensured a support determining against enemy aviation (made up primarily of Focke-Wulf Fw 200) and the U-Boots.
