Cœlé-Syria

The Cœlé-Syria , i.e. “Syria digs”, is an area of the south of the ancient Syria disputed during the Guerres of Syria, between the dynasty of Séleucides and that of the Ptolémées, since the division which follows the Bataille of Ipsos in 301 av. J-C.

In a strict sense, Cœlé-Syria corresponds to current the valley of Bekaa to the Lebanon; but this term is often useful, in a conventional way, to indicate all the going territory of Byblos (Lebanon) at the northern border of ptolémaïque Egypt, including the Judaea. With the wire of time the term of Cœlé-Syria receives different meanings however. Thus, under the Roman Empire at the time of the Severe , the Roman province of Syria, which takes the name of Syria-Cœlé, is centered around Antioche, in north; the area of Tyr, to the south, belongs to the province of Syria-Phénicie.
