César of the cinema

In 1975, Georges Cravenne created the Académie of arts and techniques of the cinema which had, from the beginning, vocation to reward the most remarkable achievements for the Cinéma, in order to have an equivalent French with the American Oscars. Thus the April 3rd 1976 took place the first César of the French cinema under the presidency of Jean Gabin. The name of the reward comes from the sculptor César Baldaccini, at the origin of the trophy given to the winners in each category. It is also and in addition an indirect homage to Raimu, large actor and unforgettable interpreter of the trilogy of Pagnol, Marius , Fanny and César , where it camps the character of César.

From 1934 to 1986, Grand Prix of the French cinema had existed the , rewarding only one film per annum, which will be de facto détrôné by César as from 1975. In the Fifties, had existed the decreed Victoires of the French Cinema each year in June. But this reward did not meet popular passion and disappeared before 1960. César reward best the films, actors and Réalisateur S of the French cinema of the year (whereas the Gerard of the cinema reward the worst). At the origin, 13 César were distributed, today 20 with the appearance of the best hopes in particular, and best documentary in 2007. César rewarding the best poster and the best producer, as for them, disappeared.

The handing-over of César is done with the Théâtre of Châtelet to Paris in February.
