Célestius
Célestius or Caelestius , Hérésiarque disciple of Peeling, born in the Campania towards 380, at the moment when its Master arrives at Rome. Born within an unknown aristocratic family, it follows a training of lawyer before joining Pélage. It meets then Rufin the Syrian towards 399. In 410, it leaves for Africa and unloads with Hippone with Pélage to meet there Saint Augustin, then absent.
In 411, he asks to be ordered priest.
He is then probably present to preach in Sicily and in Rhodos in 414. Towards the end of 415, Célestius becomes priest with Éphèse where there remain a few years.
To spring 416, Célestius and Pélage are condemned by the ordinary synod of the bishops of Proconsulaire brought together to Carthage like to Milève in Numidie and excommunicated in posthumous letters of the Innocent pope. At the end of summer 417, the pope Zozime convenes a synod in Rome to listen to both pélagiens, those Ci presenting a Libellus adversus ( Résumé our faith ); they are then recognized orthodoxe by the pope. November 8th, 417, Paulin of Milan writes to the pope to renew his charges against Célestius in the Libellus adversus Caelestium . From year 418, the crisis pélagienne takes a new turning. Indeed, on March 21st first of all, the emperor Honorius rescrit with the prefect of the Palladius court to condemn the theses pélagiens and to exile Célestius. Then, the Tracoria ( Circular ) of the pope Zozime confirms the judgment of Peeling and Célestius. A constitution of the Patrice Constance with the prefect of the Volusianus city banishes Célestius with hundred miles of Rome, this one then joined Pélage in the East. In 419, the emperor of Occident Honorius orders the expulsion of Peeling and Célestius of any province or their arrest. In 423/424, Célestius in vain tries to obtain its rehabilitation near the pope Célestin. One finds it in year 428/429 with Constantinople in company of others pélagiens like Julien d' Eclane. This year there Marius Mercator writes his Aide-mémoire on Célestius ( super Commonitorum nominates Ceslestii ).
Célestius is banished of Constantinople into 429 by the emperor of the East Théodose II, it receives a letter of consolation of the patriarch of Constantinople Nestorius. In June - July 430, the ecumenical council of Éphèse condemns the Pélagianisme and the pélagiens.
