Célestin IV
The pope Célestin IV , born Goffredo Castiglioni (death the November 10th 1241), was born in Milan. “ Leo Sabinus ” in the Prophecy of Saint Malachie. Goffredo, nephew of the pope Urbain III, became monk with Hautecombe in Savoy where he writes a history of Scotland.
Its election took place during the disturbed time of the seat of Rome by the troops of the emperor Frederic II. The cardinals were locked up in conclave from August at October because Castiglioni, which was already sick, did not succeed in having the majority. It is told that the Romans threatened the cardinals to lock up them with the corpse of the late Gregoire IX if they did not arrive at a choice. Gofredo Castiglioni was finally elected by seven cardinals only the October 25th 1241 but it occupied the throne only for seventeen days. He died before his dedication, the November 10th 1241, and was buried in the Vatican by the cardinals who had not fled the long conclave.
