CÉGEP

CEGEP A CÉGEP is a collegial educational establishment Québécois where is offered a technical training and pre-academic. In fact establishments subjected to the Law on the colleges of mainstream education and professional aim all the public colleges of Quebec, like with the payment on the mode of the collegial studies, which aim all the establishments being able to emit a Diplôme of collegial studies (DEC) or a Attestation of collegial studies. The word cégep is an acronym of College of mainstream education and professional .

Two types of programs leading to DEC are offered in the cégeps. The programs pre-academics are one two years duration (four sessions) and lead to the university; the technical programs generally last three years (six sessions) and lead to the job market and certain university programs. The Continuing education is also offered there.

Under studies, the student of collegial level sees himself allotting a Cote R, calculated starting from his output compared with that of the other students of his classes, which will determine its capacity to reach certain university programs. A dimension R average, which gives access the majority programs, is about 25.

History of the creation of the cégeps

Beginnings

The cégeps were created in 1967 by the adoption of the Bill 60 with the National Assembly of Quebec. This bill was conceived following the Rapport Relative, criticizing the difficult, discriminatory and expensive access to the higher learning and the low level of schooling of the Inhabitants of Quebec. Indeed, before the reform, two or three years more were necessary to the French-speaking people to reach the university that for the english-speaking (Superior council of education, 1988, page 94). Moreover, people living downtown were likely much more to arrive to this level than people coming from the distant areas. Finally, education postsecondaire was divided into many parallel schools, the such schools of nurses, the teacher training schools or the traditional colleges.

The cégeps were thus created in order to harmonize the system of education to the Quebec and to create a system of education equitable and diversified for all in replacement partial of the traditional Course in the private colleges carrying out towards liberal professions. The innovation of the cégeps lies in the integration of the final stages of the formations technique and pre-academic, within the same institute. This institute would make it possible to join the various schools already present in only one establishment, and which would be established in all the areas of Quebec. That facilitates the access to the university or the job market in more specialized branches, at the same time as the training of critical citizens by the means of philosophy and the literature. This system is also regarded as a transitional stage between the secondary school and the university.

The Robillard reform

In 1993, the reform Robillard started a work of revision of the programs defined by the minister of education. These programs will be revalued with an aim of corresponding to waitings of the job market, so that they form with the competences defined by the job market. This same reform adds to the load of the professors the task to be initiated in strategic teaching, to the approach by competence, and their request to create a course of integration of the assets. Finally, one creates the commission of evaluation of the collegial teaching, which is given the responsability to validate the plane success colleges, obliging the colleges to have higher rates of passage to obtain their subsidy. The approach by competence, thus amalgamated is denounced by the professorial trade unions, making so that the professors boycott the establishment of this approach until 1999.

However, the training of the Masters made place to the new pedagogy having to be integrated into the cégeps: pedagogy by competences. Certain colleges will see the courses of integration of the assets appearing only in 2000, with the profile of profession. However, the techniques of trainings used by the approach by competence were already used by certain professors with the current of the new tendencies in pedagogy.

Others critical

In 2003, the Fédération of the school commissions once again calls into question Cégeps by questioning their utility in teaching and the Système of Québécois education. The questioning and the questioning of the Québécois colleges marked its history. Indeed, the maintenance of a complete site network is expensive, and the liberal government, in period of budgetary cuts, proposes, without success, to rather add a year to secondary education and another with the university formation. Others see collegial teaching like a manner single and desirable to facilitate the transition between the secondary and the university.

Cégeps at present

Today, the vocation of the cégeps is primarily the transmission of the knowledge and the professional expertises, the training of citizens ready to live in democracy as well as the technology transfer of industry about the middle of education. Its democratization was a success: 57% of the students who enter to the secondary school find there. There is very little creation to know (Recherche) compared to the Université S. However, of interesting advanced are made using the many efforts coming from the Québécois Association of collegial pedagogy.

Conditions of entry

The cégep makes following secondary education. To be able to reach it, a student must be holder of a Diplôme of secondary studies (OF) or of a Diplôme of professional studies (EPD). He is also obligatory to have supplemented the following courses (preliminary):
  • History of 4th secondary (085414);

  • Physical sciences of 4th secondary (056486);
  • Language of teaching of 5th secondary (129536);
  • Language second (English) of 4th secondary or Language second (French) of 5th secondary (156544);
  • Mathematical 416, conditional admission. 15 hours of mathematics.

Note: as opposed to what people can croirent, mathematics 514 of the fifth secondary are not more required to enter to the cégep. On the other hand, if an individual fails 514, it will have to follow a program of mathematics at its first year of the cégep.

D' other courses can be necessary, very depend on the program in which the student fits.

If the student supplemented his diploma before June 1st 1997, no additional course is necessary in the case of DEC and only the language class of teaching is necessary for EPD.

Cours du cégep

All the cégépiens must follow courses of Philosophie (3), of Littérature (4), of English (2) and of physical education (3). The obligatory courses include also complementary 2 cours (general culture, out of selected specialization). For the cégépiens which study with the anglophone cégeps, the courses of philosophy are replaced by courses humanities (social sciences).
  • In Philosophy, one gives the course philosophy and rationality in first session, the course the human being as a second session and a course of ethics adapted to the programme of studies of the student then.

  • the English courses given are two in all the cégeps.

Formation pre-academic with the cégep

The formation pre-academic prepares the students at the university level in various fields. This formation is one 2 years duration (4 sessions). Here thus a list of the formations pre-academics:

200.B0: Sciences of nature

The program sciences of nature includes/understands two profiles pre-academics. The first, Life sciences and Health , is addressed to the students eager to continue their studies in biology, chemistry or medicine, inter alia. This profile stresses the courses of biology and chemistry. The second profile, Sciences Pure and Applied , stresses mathematics and physics and prepares being studied of engineer or researcher.

Here a description of the courses given in Science of Nature, gathered in four disciplines, mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology.

  • In Mathématiques three courses are obligatory for all the science students natural. The first course names Differential Calculus (NYA), the second is entitled Integral calculus (NYB) and third is Linear algebra and Vectorial Geometry (NYC). Differential and Integral Calculus III (advanced Calculation) and Probabilities and Statistiques are optional courses. Certain Cégeps, like the Cégep of Pocatière, make it possible also to follow the course Compléments of mathematics .

  • In Physical, three courses is also obligatory. The first course names Mécanique (NYA), the second is entitled Électricité and Magnétisme (NYB) and the third is called Ondes and Modern Physique (NYC). Some cégeps, the such Marianopolis College, the Cégep of Holy-Foy, the Cégep of River-of-Wolf and the Cégep Limoilou, also make it possible to choose a course of introduction to astrophysics, in option.

  • In Chemistry, two courses only are obligatory. The first course names General Chimie: the Matter (NYA), second draft of the chemistry of solutions (NYB). Two courses of organic chemistry ( Organic chemistry I and Organic chemistry II ) are also offered, in option, in the majority of the cégeps.

  • In Biology, the obligatory character of the courses varies according to the cégeps. The course Évolution and Diversité of Alive (NYA) is always obligatory, while the course Structure and Fonction of Pluricellular the is obligatory only in some cégeps. The course Physiologie of Alive the is sometimes obligatory in sciences of health but optional in pure sciences. The course Microbiology and Immunologie is also offered in options in some cégeps.

The optional courses suitable for the program are two and are generally carried out in fourth session.

Some cégeps make it possible to combine the musical studies and the scientific studies while following a three years program entitled Musique and Sciences of Nature . A program combining Technical data processing and natural science exists too. In addition, a program entitled Sciences, Letters and Arts combining the natural science, the social sciences, the literature and the visual arts is offered, in some cégeps, with the students eager to invest themselves to the maximum in multidisciplinary studies.

300.A0: Social sciences

The general goal of the program of social sciences is the study of human and its civilization.

Courses are available in the following fields

  • Administration : Study of the operation of the organizations and their management
  • Anthropology : Study of human civilization on the cultural and biological level
  • Biology : Study of the human body
  • Economy : Study of the means of production and exchange
  • Geography : Study of human civilization in space
  • History : Study of human civilization in time
  • Psychology : Study of the operation of the spirit of human the
  • Political science : Study of the official administration and the institutions
  • Sociology : Study of the operation of the human society

The field of the social sciences generally includes/understands four profiles:

  • Individual : formation concentrated on the study of psychology and anthropology.
  • Company : formation concentrated on the study of political science.
  • World : formation concentrated on the study of the geography and world geopolitics.
  • Administration : formation concentrated on the study of the economy and the administration.

Variations exist in various establishments, offering a characteristic to the students of this profile (e.g.: Optimonde with the cégep of Old man-Montreal).

It should be noted that there is for all the science students human an obligatory course in each following field: psychology ( general psychology ), sociology ( individual and company ), history ( history of Western civilization ) and economy ( total economy ). The other courses are selected according to the profile, and some courses are selected other profiles. Usually, a science student human will study in at least six of the fields quoted above. There is an obligatory course in mathematics, quantitative methods , but there is also possibility of taking courses moreover in option ( advanced quantitative methods or differential and integral calculus and linear algebra and vectorial geometry ).

Finally, there are two courses of general culture which one takes except program, complementary to the formation.

500.A1 Arts and letters

The field of Arts and letters includes/understands several profiles, in particular:
  • Culture and literature
  • Culture and languages
  • Communication and cinema
  • Theater
  • visual Arts
  • Multi-media

Training programs technique

In addition to training programs pre-academic, the colleges have the right to emit diplomas in the programs of technical training. The majority of the colleges are obliged to give certain programs, of which the program of care male nurses and the data-processing program of technique. Certain programs are distributed according to the needs for the area. This is why the Cégep of Pocatière has the techniques related to agriculture and the Cégep de Saint-Félicien, with the Saguenay-Lake-Saint-Jean, have the single techniques in Quebec related to the natural environment. Other programs are distributed geographically, to maximize accessibility. It is the case inter alia trades of arts, given to Quebec with the Cégep Limoilou to allow an access to the trades of arts in the East of Quebec.

Alternative program with the collegial one

It exists there also alternative programs with the cégep like the Double DEC, AEC, the international Baccalauréat, the program Sport-studies, the remote Cégep, the part-time Cégep and the Cégep for adults.

List institutions of collegial teaching

  • List of the cégeps of Quebec
  • List of the subsidized private colleges of Quebec
  • List of the colleges deprived under license of Quebec
  • List of the collegial governmental schools of Quebec
  • List of the collegial centers of technology transfer

The majority of the students of the cégeps buy their handbooks and their school stationery in co-operative bookstores affiliated with the network Coopsco, which are also a source of part-time Emploi for much of young people.

A book to be consulted on the cégeps would be the Handy guide of the collegial studies , published by the regional Service of the admissions of metropolitan Montreal (SRAM), the official agency of the admissions for the Metropolitan region of Montreal.
