Anoukis is the Greek name of a goddess of the Egyptian Mythologie. Its Egyptian name is Anqet (or Anket , Anouket ).

Functions

With the Ancient Empire, she was venerated like a divinity associated with water. Girl of the god Re, it took care on the king and of the good progress of believed of the the Nile.

With the New Empire, it became the parèdre of the god Khnoum at the sides of Satis (of which it is generally the girl) with which it forms the Triade of Elephantine. It is then charged to channel the rising generated by Satis to avoid too little and the too full one. Among his epithets one thus finds, “That which nourishes the fields”, “That which gives the life” or “That which draws ahead” (in reference to the flood). It also symbolizes Nubie, country of the sources of the Nile. It is then the “lady of the South” and is associated with the invaluable products that the Egyptians were going to seek there.

Its crowned animal was the gazelle dorcade, many on the edges of the Nile in the area of the first cataract, whose necropolis was discovered in Kômir, in the south of Esna.

With the ptolémaïque time, it was also associated with the lust and with sexuality by extension of its fertilizing role and perhaps because of its ambiguous name. It is then associated with the shell Cowrie of which the shape recall that of a vagina.

Diffusion of the worship

Especially adored in the area of the first cataract, of the temples were exclusively devoted to him (as on the island of Séhel) or it divided them with the other members of the triad (as on the island of Éléphantine). She is also adored in Nubie and in Kômir, where she is associated with the goddess Nephtys.

The Greeks compared it to the goddess Hestia.

Representation

It is represented under the features of one woman to the grinding dress and often holds in its hand the large spectrum of papyrus. It is capped with a high crown of feathers (that the Egyptologists seem to think of Nubian origin; probably feathers of Ostrich), sometimes of the decorated white crown of two horns of gazelle or in anthropomorphic form with a head of gazelle.
