Bzip2
See also: Zip
bzip2 is at the same time the name of a algorithm of Data compression and of a Free software under UNIX developed by Julian Seward which implements this algorithm.
The extension of the compressed files with this software is generally .bz2.
The algorithm
The algorithm bzip2 uses the Transformée of Burrows-Wheeler with the Codage of Huffman. The compression ratio is better than that of the traditional tool Gzip and tends to replace it for the distribution of UNIX software.
Software
bunzip2 is the order making it possible to decompress the files .bz2, following the example gunzip for the .gz files.
bzip2 is used jointly with GNU tar for the compressed files tarball: tar cjvf monfichier.tar .bz2 fichier1 fichier2 repertory tar xjvf monfichier.tar .bz2
dbzip2, pbzip2 and bzip2smp are parallel implementations of bzip2.
