Bydgoszcz

Bydgoszcz (in German, Bromberg), is a town of Poland, the chief town of the Voïvodie of Cujavie-Poméranie and its more big city.

History

Bydgoszcz obtained the statute of city in 1346 and at the 14th century became an important economic center because one negotiated corn and salt there. The city was integrated into the German Empire in 1871 and bore the name of Bromberg then. Until the 19th century, the city was put a little at the variation because the capital of the area and the most important center ecnomonic were Toruń. The construction of the railway lines with Gdańsk, Piła and Toruń changed the things suddenly. When Poland retrouvit its independence in 1918, Bydgoszcz, then Bromberg, returned to him.

The city is in 1939 the theater of the massacre of the Sunday strapping of Bydgoszcz by the Poles of part of the German community of the city.

In 1973, one added to Bydgoszcz the district Fordon being located at the east of the city on the the Vistula.

Bydgoszcz-Toruń metropolis

During the change of the administrative units in Poland in 1999, Bydgoszcz was placed in the voïvodie whose chief town should have been Toruń, which was unacceptable for the inhabitants of this city, which is almost twice larger. Finally, the government decided that the voïvodie Cujavie-Poméranie would have two chief towns. Bygdoszcz belongs to the metropolis Bygodszcz-Toruń , these two cities are integrated quickly and in 2003 the medical Academy of Bygodzcz joint the Université of Toruń.
