Buxières-under-the-Coasts is a common French, located in the department of the Meuse and the area Lorraine.

Geography

History

The denomination " BUXARIAS" appears for the first time in Year 709, on the will of foundation of the Abbey of Saint-Mihiel written by the count Wolfoad.

Buxarias became deformed during the centuries to become by deterioration of the popular speech Buscerias, Buxaères, and finally as from the XVI century, Buxières. This noun was again modified during the XX century, or rather supplemented by " under-the-côtes" in order to distinguish it from some thirty villages bearing the same name.

the Vault of the Bore-holes

Contruite in 1890 on the initiative of Nicolas Baudot on the headland of the coasts of the Bore-holes at an altitude of 370 measure.

A famous scultor of Saint-Mihiel, Mr Chenin-Bichet was retained to build this elegant neo-gotic vault of style, surmounted of a statue of 03 measure height with on his feet the Latin " inscription; Sub tuum refugium configimus "

The tradition reports that before the Christian era, the inhabitants of these places adored their divinities by making large fires, " Bures" , with the summer solstice.
