Buton

Buton , or Butung , indicates a group of islands in the province Indonesia of Sulawesi of the South-east which in addition to the island of the same name, includes/understands those of Muna, Wowoni and Kabaena. Its surface is approximately 4.200 km ². The island is covered with forest and is crossed in its axis by a range of hills limestones culminating with 1.190 meters.

The administrative chief town of the archipelago and its port is Baubau on the south-western coast.

The language buton belongs to the group known as " sulawesien" Austronesian branch of the Languages austronésiennes.

History

The name of Buton is attested as of XIVe century after J. - C. the Nagarakertagama , a poem epic writes in 1365 in the kingdom java are born from Majapahit, mentions " Butun" among some hundred " regions tributaires" kingdom. Actually, the territory controlled by Majapahit did not extend that on part of the east and center of Java. " regions tributaires" were in fact of the counters forming a sales network whose Majapahit was the center. Majapahit sent to it dignitaries of which the role was to make sure that these counters were not devoted to a private trade which would escape the kingdom.

Buton plays a part in the expansion of the Islam in Célèbes, with the conversion of its sovereign about 1580.

The last sultan of Buton died in 1960.
