Butare

Located at the south of the Rwanda, Butare (founded under the name of Astrida , in homage to the queen Astrid, during the Belgian colonial period) is the main city of the southern province of the country. Before the administrative reform of 2006, Butare was also the capital of a province ( prefecture until 2002) to which it gave its name (integrated today with the old provinces of Gitarama and Gikongoro in the Province of the south). Butare is the seat of the National university of Rwanda and, in spite of the recent opening of various universities and universities with Kigali, it continues to be regarded by the Rwandan ones as the " capital universitaire" of their country. Butare also shelters the National museum of Rwanda.

From the 7 to the 21 April 1994, the area of Butare was saved by the genocide. Starting from this date, following the speech of Theodore Sindikubwabo, president of the temporary Government Rwandan, and with the assassination of the prefect Jean-Baptiste Habyarimana (without family ties with Juvénal Habyarimana), the genocide will also break in this area.
