Business of the Corsican guard

The business of the Corsican guard is an illustration of the will of Louis XIV to impose his power to the other European sovereigns.

The August 20th 1662, from the soldiers of the Corsican Garde of the pope Alexandre VII come to the hands with the French in charge of protection with the Ambassade with France to Rome. Shots are drawn on fits with body of the ambassador the duke of Créquy.

The not reacting pope, Louis XIV orders with the ambassador to leave Rome and moves away from Paris the Nonce: it is almost the diplomatic rupture. The Parlement of Aix-en-Provence decides the annexation of Avignon, possession papal, with the kingdom of France.

The February 12th 1664 an agreement is reached. The governor of Rome must come to be explained to Paris, the Corsican guard is dissolved and a pyramid is built in Rome at the place where the attack was made. The Legate of the pope, the cardinal Chigi, will come to publicly excuse in front of the king the July 29th 1664. France returns Avignon to the pope.
