Business Tuvia Grossman
The business Tuvia Grossman is a media business of Manipulation of image in the context of the israélo-Palestinian Conflit. The photograph is diffused in several international mediums and is presented initially like the photograph of a Palestinian attacked by an Israeli police officer, it was in fact that of an American Jewish student beaten by several Palestinian demonstrators.
Chronology

the September 30th 2000, little time after the beginning of the the Second Intifada, the agency Associated Press diffuses a photo representative in the foreground a wounded young man (in particular with the head) in front of an Israeli police officer in background drawing up in threatening way a bludgeon. The image seems to indicate that the police officer attacked the young man. This impression is maintained by the comment published with the photograph: “ a wounded Palestinian demonstrator ”.
- on October 1st, the NewYork Times takes again the photograph, indicating in legend: “ An Israeli police officers and has Palestinian one the Temple Mount ”.
- the October 2nd, the French daily newspaper Libération also takes again the photograph with the same comments presenting a “ Palestinian victim of the confrontations ”.
- the October 3rd, the newspapers are contacted by Aaron Grossman, American Juif which recognized on photo his son Tuvia, student in Chicago and on a journey in Israel. In its letter with the American newspaper, he writes:
Regarding your picture one A5 page off the Israeli soldier and the Palestinian one the Mount Temple -- that Palestinian is actually my its, Tuvia Grossman, has Jewish student from Chicago. He, and two off his friends, were pulled from to their taxicab while dolly in Jerusalem, by off has mob Palestinian Arabs, and were severely beaten and stabbed.That picture could not cuts been taken one the Temple Mount because there are No gas stations one the Temple Mount and certainly nun with Hebrew lettering, like the one clearly seen behind the Israeli soldier attempting to protect my his from the mob.
Reality of the image
Tuvia Grossman, the victim with the face in blood on the photograph, is an American Jewish student of Chicago on a journey in Israel. Little time before the catch of the stereotype, Tuvia and its friends were extracted from their taxi by Palestinian demonstrators who then severely beat them, which explains their wounds.
The Israeli police officer, introduced by the media like the attacker, actually helped the young victims of the Palestinian demonstrators.
Consequences
The October 6th 2000, Associated Press confirms that it is about a " error ". The NewYork Times published a new article to correct the precedent.
Several organizations (and among them an official site of the Egyptian government) took again this image while continuing to present the victim like Palestinian. In particular Muslim organizations used the photograph in question to support a Boycott against the company Coke.
In April 2002, a Parisian Court condemns the daily newspaper Libération and arranges it Associated Press to pay 4500 euros of compensations for the Grossman family for the made use of its image.
