Business Louis Mailloux
The Affaire Louis Mailloux is the name of a political crisis and social which shook the New Brunswick and the Canada between 1871 and 1875.
In 1871, the government of George E. King presented a bill to the legislative Assemblée of New Brunswick, the Common School Act . This law aimed at reforming the system of public education. The bill was adopted on May 5th, 1871.
Supported by the Irish of the province, some Appointed and the Clergy, the inhabitants protests and asks for a network of Catholic schools. They revolt against the partisans of the law and the merchants English. That degenerates into riots with Caraquet. The police force intervenes with the assistance of a militia and army. There are two died on January 27th, 1875: John Gifford, a 22 year old militiaman come from Newcastle, and Louis Mailloux, 17 years. The secondary school and a street bears its name today.
