History

Winston Rodney was born on March 1st 1948 with Saint Ann' S Bay in Jamaica, like Bob Marley and Marcus Garvey. Burning Spear (ignited lance), its name of scene, is a pseudonym borrowed from a politician activist of the Kenya, Jomo Kenyatta, which used this nickname for the first time.

Burning Spear voluntarily maintains the mystery on its childhood, during which the survival of its family, very humble, depended on the odd jobs that the children could achieve.

He dreamed to record music to be able to leave his family misery:

I was walking in the mountains of Saint Ann, the spirit elsewhere, without knowing where I really went. Suddenly, I started to run to Bob Marley, there too without good knowledge why. Fork with the hand, Bob was joining its farm by holding an ass on which was hung plants and tools. One papoté a little and I asked him where I could address to me to make music. And Bob said: “OK man, tries to see that with Studio One.

And it is here that Burning Spear records its first two albums, Door Peep and Rocking Time, which is often regarded as the two albums more roots of the history of the reggae. It will sign then with the label Island, then will change several times of recording company during its long career.

In 1978, it is illustrated in the film Rockers, at the sides of Leroy " Horsemouth" Wallace, Gregory Isaacs, Kiddus I, Big Youth and Jacob Miller; in particular in a memorable scene at the seaside where he interprets one of his songs " Jah No Dead" has cappella.

In 1987, it republishes its albums Marcus Garvey and Garvey' S Ghost in 100th Anniversary to celebrate the 100 years of the birth date of Marcus Garvey

In 2002 it founds, with his wife, Sonia Rodney, a Recording company, Burning Spear Records.
