A success in France

Delivering the portrait of a team of fighter pilots insolents on the theater of operations of the Pacific, the series was the subject of an important success on behalf of the televiewers in France.

The heroic prestige of the pilots mixed with the lovesong edulcorated with the flirts with the nurses with the military hospital, the whole in the paradisiac islands of the Pacific where the action proceeded.

Environments

This exoticism was reinforced, for the French televiewer, by the fact that this zone of the conflict was then little known of the public, at the same time historically and geographically; from where the success of the series.

The portrait given was Hollywood and gave a succinte impression hardness of the engagements on the Pacifique theater during the Second world war.

In this respect, the series is contemporary unconcern of cruising has fun . American side, the series made it possible to remember the time of a war “right” that the fathers had delivered, whereas the servant boys returned from the stagnation of the Guerre of Vietnam.

Well after the the Seventies, the film Pearl Harbor would take again this alchemy made up of war for the good cause, fray of out of date romanticism.

Anecdotes

  • the original title of the series, Baa, Baa Black Sheep , is inherited the book of Gregory Boyington, ace of the Campagnes of the Pacific, of which it is inspired. It is a reference to famous. However, this counting rhyme is not the song which one can hear at the beginning of each episode, covered in the VF by the opening speech read by Jacques Thébault. The song in question is ( " We are poor little lambs/Who cuts lost our way/Baa! Baa! Baa! " ). The connoted direction of which does not follow the herd is identical in English. Although immature, the pilots do not let themselves any more tell by the administration of the Navy…

  • the pilot episode is a film in itself, very different from the format of the later episodes of the serial (50 min); one sees Greg Boyington there, already ace of the volunteers flying Tigres in China on board a Curtiss P-40 to realize that the arrival of the Mitsubishi Zero SEN outclassed its apparatus. The way in which Boyington subtilizes at its own ends a flotilla bases its legend and its very paternal authority on its pilots, finally equipped with the Chance Vought F4U Corsair. Throughout the episodes, technical capabilities of the plane will be tested and exceeded (missions of bombardment, torpedes, tanks additional, landings in atypical conditions).

  • truth Gregory Boyington makes an appearance in the episode Organization , it plays a general who takes part in a festival.

  • the visible zero in the series are in fact of the North American T-6 made up to resemble the famous Japanese plane as much as possible.
