Bunker buster
A bunker buster is a bends conceived to penetrate of the strengthened targets or in-depth buried targets. It differs from the other time bombs by its specific design, in particular a more solid and aerodynamic envelope. She adds to the air forces of the capacities limited before to troops on the ground of military specialists in destruction.
To penetrate it uses its kinetic energy.
The guidance system can be GPS, laser, mixed (nonexhaustive list).
History
Bombs with penetrating load
From a technical point of view, a bomb bunker buster is a bomb with penetrating load. The principle of penetrating load does not have anything again: ball and arrow. Many bombs being able to be penetrating are in service in many armies, BGL and Paveway ™ , to quote only they. Most of the time, it is enough to a simple modification of the time of detonation to the impact so that a bomb becomes penetrating. Thus of many bombs which do not return in the category bunker buster, have however the capacity to penetrate and destroy strengthened targets of type bunker.
Differentiation
The first bomb qualified and entirely designed to be a bunker buster is the GBU-28, approximately 2.200 kg, conceived with the the United States in 1991. It can penetrate 6 meters of Reinforced concrete or 30 meters under ground. In 1991, this constituted a great improvement compared with other bombs being able to penetrate only 1,5 meters concrete to see 3 meters for some. The only other bends conventional which could be to him compared, in term of destruction of strengthened targets, was the bomb Britannique Grand Slam , 10 tons, at the end of the Second world war.
