Bulge (river)

The Jarret is a river coming from the Massif of the Star, taking its source close to Pichauris and which, after having crossed Marseilles, is thrown in the Huveaune, in the district of Holy-Marguerite.

An alive river

Wedged between the hills external of Marseilles, the Bulge dug a small valley escarpé between Beausoleil and the Lavie falls. The district of the Carthusian monks develops on the slopes of the small valley of the Madeleine, dug by the Bulge. This small valley forms a narrow passage between the plates Saint-Charles-Longchamp and that of Saint-Julien. Descending massive of the Star, water of this torrent could be tumultuous more especially as the passage was narrow in this place before being thrown more calmly in the delta of Huveaune.

Drain then covering

After the commercial rise of the year 1000, the problems of availability out of drinking water are exacerbated by the tensions between the communities: the “high” city is quickly in mode of Disette. New a Aqueduct, bringing water by the door of Aix, as well as fountain S and Abreuvoir S is built.

At the beginning of the 14th century, the course of the Bulge is connected to the existing aqueduct.

In 1954, Gaston Defferre, mayor of Marseilles, covers the old course of the district of Just Saint to that of Timone, to make of it a by-pass with twice three ways (constituted by the data base Jean-Mill, the data base Sakakini, the data base Francoise-Duparc and the data base Marshal-June) commonly called by-pass of the Bulge or more simply the Bulge. The river continues to run out today this large by-pass below.
