Bulgarian Lev

The lev Bulgarian (in Bulgarian: лев) is the monetary unit of the Bulgaria since 1881, when Bulgaria becomes an autonomous republic of the Ottoman Empire in 1881. Its name meant lion in Bulgare and in the same beginning as the Rumanian Leu and the Moldavian Leu.

History of the Bulgarian lev

During its creation, in 1881, it was with parity with the Franc French

In 1952, following the inflation of post-war period, he knew a first redenomination and 1 " nouveau" lev BGK replaced 100 " anciens" levs BGJ .

In 1962, a new devaluation took place at the rate of 1 BGL for 10 BGK. The lev remained then stable nearly 3 decades.

Since the adoption of new a lev (code ISO BGN ) in 1999 (1 " nouveau" lev BGN = 1.000 " anciens" levs BGL), whose official foreign exchange rate was fixed at 1 DEM = 1 BGN, the lev is related to the Euro within the framework of a currency board (since January 1st 1999) at the rate of 1,95583 for a Euro which was also that of the Deutschemark. It will be thus ready to integrate the euro as soon as the time provided for in the treaties is respected (either on January 1st, 2009 or at the latest with the mid- 2009).

Law on the redenomination of the Bulgarian lev (adopted by the 38e National Assembly on February 19th, 1999; published in the Official journal , number 20 of March 5th, 1999; modified, numbers 30 and 65 of 1999): Article 1. Starting from the July 5th 1999, the Bulgarian lev must be redénommé each time 1.000 " anciens" levs must be exchanged against a " nouveau" lev.
