Bukavu

Bukavu (to pronounce Boukavou ) is a city of the Democratic republic of Congo located on western southern bank of the Lac Kivu and the capital of the province of the South-Kivu. The city counts approximately 245.000 inhabitants, and some 250.000 others in the suburbs and the villages neighborhood.

Many a war crimes, Rape S, massacres were perpetrated there between 1996 and 2004 by the Rwandaises troops of Mr. Paul Kagame, the Ugandan weapon of President Yoweri Museni with the assistance of the Americans and English government and the generals Nkundabatware and like Mutebusi.

In 2004, the city was the theater of bloody combat between the Congolese troops Rwando-Ugandan-Burundian and governmental troops.

History

Old territory of the kingdom of Bashi (name of country of Bashi, Shi ethnos group) the town of Bukavu was founded in 1901 by the colonial authorities Belgian. First of all named Costermansville in the honor of Paul Costermans, it accommodated an important European population under the colonial mode. In 1967, Bukavu was the theater of a battle opposing 600 soldiers white Katangais and 170 mercenaries to the 15.000 men of the general Mobutu. These mercenaries, Belgians and French for the majority, were ordered by a Belgian adventurer, Jean Schramme. The battle balanced in November 1967 by the defeat of the mercenaries and their escape towards the Rwanda.

Education

In connection with the Congolese education system, Bukavu counts many elementary schools. Those accommodate the old pupils from 6 to 12 years. Primary education lasts 6 years and is sanctioned by a certificate of primary studies. The pupils are obliged to pass from regular controls during the school year. Those which fail see obliged to take again the year. After the elementary school, comes the secondary school comprising the cycle from orientation and humanities. The pupils are allowed in a cycle of 2 years orientation after their certificate. This one is a joint base making it possible to look further into the primary formation, but also which opens with choices for a precise option with humanities. They are 4 years post cycle of orientation. In Bukavu, the most known schools are the Collège Alfajiri, the College Wima, the College Kitumaini, the Institute Bwindi, the Polytechnic school or Technical Institute Fundi Maendeleo (ITFM), the School of Teaching Application (EDAP) of the Teaching Institute of higher learning (ISP), the Institute of Ibanda. All the province is enamelled secondary schools. The end of this cycle is sanctioned by the examinations of State. Those are organized with the national scales and give right a diploma of State. Those which succeed can fit at the university or in Institutes of higher learning. They exempt a whole a university education. Bukavu counts, the catholic Université of Bukavu, the Protestant University (UEA), the official University of Bukavu (UOB), the Teaching Institute of higher learning (ISP), the Institute of higher learning of Rural development (ISDR), the Institute of higher learning of the Medical Techniques (ISTM) and many other private institutions.

Évêché

The Archidiocèse of Bukavu (created as apostolic Vicariate of the Kivu in 1912) paid a heavy tribute with the various conflicts which did not cease devastating the area of the South-Kivu. Mgr Christophe Munzihirwa, Jesuit, archbishop of Bukavu, was assassinated on October 29th, 1996 during the catch of the city by the troops of the AFDL of fire Laurent-Desired Kabila, father of the current president of the R.D.C. After the second war of August 1998, Its successor, Mgr Emmanuel Kataliko, were constrained with the exile where he was previously bishop (in Butembo) by the authorities of RCD-Gummed which controlled the area then. Following the pressures popular and international community, it returned triumphantly in Bukavu in September 2000 to die a few weeks later on October 4th, 2000 of an cardiac arrest at the time of a voyage to Rome, probably exhausted by the months of ceaseless fight for the defense of the people of Kivu. After a long interim ensured by Mgr. Joseph Gwamuhanya, current vice-chancellor of the catholic University of Bukavu, the Vatican indicated Mgr Charles Mbogha, bishop of Isiro as archbishop. At the time of its mass of establishment, this one was struck of an brain attack which paralyzed the right-sided partially to him and obliged it to go away lengthily from Bukavu.
