Buitani

Buitani is an island of the Esprit S and the spirit of the Ground in the Mythologie nauruane.

Buitani is at the same time the spirit of the Earth the place of stay of the noble spirits of the Nauruans. If the spirits of dead cannot go on Buitani, they are found in the ocean or the stones and the shrubs of the island of Nauru. Each hearth nauruan then had a protective spirit which received each day in offering on behalf of the family a little Farine deposited in front of the house.

The frigate played also a big role because this Oiseau was regarded as being the receptacle of the spirits and the bond with Buitani whose door was the Baie of Anibare. A Banana mark still today the site of this entry. During ceremonies in July, a frigate was captured and profited from the best treatments.

Before the Colonization at the end of the 19th century, these practices were very widespread but the evangelization of the population involved their decline. However certain Nauruans still respect prohibition not to approach the entry of Buitani and celebrate the frigate in July.
