History

Buironfosse is a toponym whose origin could come from the Germanic word “ bur ” or “ burg ” meaning Castle-extremely.

This place was mentioned successively in the forms “ Buironfossa ” with XIIe, “ Birenfosse ” in 1223, “ Buronfosse ” in 1339 and “ Buyronfosse ” in 1541.

The site had to be for a long time occupied by the man since one discovered there prehistoric tools in Silex as well as Gallo-Roman vestiges. Towards Xe Century, Buironfosse, equipped with a fort built out of wood on a feudal Mound and surrounded by a ditch, was a stronghold seigneurial whose properties extended to north from Thiérache, of Ribemont to Avesnes.

The castle extremely initially of wood, reinforced hones some in XIe and XIIe Siècles, was shaven in 1423 per Jean of Luxembourg, combined the Burgundian ones. A church replaced it, which in its turn plundered, set fire to, strengthened and was several times rebuilt. In 1868, the mound itself was levelled to allow the construction of the current church of Romance inspiration.

In XIIe Century, Buironfosse had a certain importance, so much so that in 1175, Jacques d' Avesnes granted a charter to him, giving to his inhabitants freedom to manage the goods of the commune, to elect a mayor and his aldermen. The resources produced by the communal forest called “ the Uses” made it possible the population to remain and to develop.

A local anecdote reports that in 1339 a hare, appeared on the battle field where were on the point of clashing French and English, caused a disorder such as the combat did not take place there.
