In 1994, the new provisional constitution of South Africa instituted the function of vice-president.
The function was confirmed at the time of the final constitution of 1996.
In the beginning, there existed two vice-presidents within the framework of the government of national union ANC - national Parti. The two stations were distributed between the two representatives of the two parties most representative of the Parliament.
After the end of the government of national union in 1996, only one vice-president was maintained, chosen by the president of the republic.
