The toponym Bugnein appears in the forms Bunheng (1282, titles of Béarn), Bunhen (XIIIe century, Fors de Béarn), Bugnhenh (1334, notaries of Navarrenx), Vunhenh (1385, censier of Béarn), Feels Johan de Bunhenh (1396, notaries of Navarrenx), Bunheng (XIVe century, censier of Béarn), Bunienh (1546, reformation of Béarn), Bugneng and Buneinh (respectively 1608 and 1612, insinuations of the diocese of Oloron).

Paul Raymond note that in 1385, Bugnein counted 56 fires and depended on the Bailliage of Navarrenx.
