Bufo periglenes

The clamping plate gilded or clamping plate of Monteverde ( Bufo periglenes ) is small a Crapaud (of approximately 5 centimetres) of the family of the bufonidés living with the Costa Rica which lived in a handle of places of the forest of Monteverde, with the Costa Rica, in Central America. It is classified by IUCN like extinct species since 2001. Not only one specimen of gilded clamping plate was not seen since 1989. This species, which was discovered in 1960, was confined with a small area of high-altitude of the forest of cloud of Monteverde, in a zone of 10 km ². The extinction of the gilded clamping plate is quoted like part of the Déclin of the populations of Amphibians, and it became the emblem of this known as decline. The Climate change due to the total warming is one of the causes advanced to explain its disappearance.

Biology

The gilded clamping plate is a species of the kind Bufo (family Bufonidae ) which includes/understands more than 250 species. He lived in the reserve of the forest of the Clouds of Monteverde, in Costa Rica, in a zone of 10 km ² to 1500 m of average altitude.

Morphology

The male adults measure hardly 5 cm in length. From yellow color orange phosphorescent, they were distinguished from the majority of the clamping plates by their brilliant skin and luisante. Its discoverer, Jay Savage, were so surprised when they saw them for the first time, that he did not believe his yeux of it; ; he is quoted saying: “I must acknowledge that my reaction when I saw them for the first time was a mixture of incredulity and suspicion, as if somebody had soaked them in enamelled painting”. The female of the species was slightly taller than the male, and its aspect was rather different. Instead of being brilliant, the females were of color green olive or black with scarlet spots surrounded by yellow.

Reproduction

One knows little thing concerning the behavior of the gilded clamping plates. It is thought that they lived under ground. The eggs were transformed into tadpoles two months after the laying
