Biography

Beginnings

Influenced as of its childhood by John Lee Hooker, Muddy Toilets and Howlin' Wolf which will give him later desire for emigrating towards Chicago, it manufactures at the 13 years age a Guitare of fortune starting from a mosquito net and a piece of wood! But, it is at 16 years that his/her father offers his first true guitar to him, one two cords. Buddy plays then simply of the guitar to spend time.

Some time later, whereas he sat on the threshold of his house in the train of gratouiller quietly, an unknown approaches it, says to him that he looks at it playing each evening and that he would like to offer a new guitar to him. And thus, by the best of the chances, Buddy finds itself the following day with a new guitar blazing, more justified than ever to imitate its idols. Consequently, it is involved with assiduity and is given quickly in concert to Baton-Rouge with the local bluesmen like the Big Poppa John Tilley Band, Lightnin' Slim, Guitar Slim, Slim Harpo or Lazy Lester. But Buddy knows already that its future is not in this segregationist South and already thinks of leaving to North the the United States. In search of a well paid employment, it leaves in 1957 for Chicago, the town of its idols. At that time, he does not imagine yet to make career in the music.

Chicago

Arrived at Chicago, he traverses the city during several days, with for only accompaniment his guitar and the hunger with the belly until he meets almost miraculeusement a man who asks to him whether he can play to him of the guitar in exchange of a whiskey. A hamburger would have been better but Buddy plays all the same, décomplexé, and packs the unknown which leads it at once in a box where one of his/her friends plays, some Otis Rush. And while at the same time Rush is on the point of leaving, Buddy starts to play The things I used to C . Otis will tell only the owner to engage it.

Consequently, Buddy which plays several times per week is not long in attracting many people and is even pointed out by Muddy Waters in person which will lavish some councils to him. In this cluster of bars with blues, Buddy crosses other young people who them also will not delay to explode; like Magic Sam, Earl Hooker or Freddie King. But it is especially the meeting with its first source of inspiration B.B. King which will remain most beneficial for Buddy. Its growing notoriety then involves it on the various scenes of Chicago in company from others bluesmen of reputation: with Otis Rush with Club 708 or in Trianon Ballroom with B.B. King.

In 1958, Buddy meets Willie Dixon, which still to date remains the largest type-setter of blues, and records thanks to him for the label Cobra Sittin' and cryin' the blues before becoming, for Chess, guitarist of studio, then in solo. It records thus with Ike Turner ( This is the end ), Otis Rush, Sony Boy Williamson, Muddy Waters and Willie Dixon. Parallel to its career of sideman, it also records in solo, between 1958 and 1964, several 45 turns, Sit and cry , Try to quit my baby… , Broken hearted blues and especially First time I put the blues that one finds today joined together on both CDs Buddy Guy one Chess vol. 1+2 .

Buddy will occur then with the harmonicite Junior Wells on the album Buddy Guy & Junior Wells play the blues and leaves into 1960 individual the Let coils me you baby and Ten years ago . One also finds it on the album live Blues from Big Bill' S recorded with Copacabana Club in Chicago with his friends Howlin' Wolf and Mr. Waters.

But great success arrives only in the middle of the years 1960. During the years 1960 and 1970, it records several traditional of Chicago blues as has man and the blues , This is Buddy Guy (with Clapton), Hold that planes and especially Stone Crazy . Thanks to the support of Eric Clapton who often quotes it like one of his great influences, Buddy manages to touch the white public easily and leaves in round throughout the world. In 1965, he plays in Europe in American folk blues festival. In 1967, it is this time at Mariposa folk blues festival with Toronto. In 1970, it makes even the first part of the French round of the Rolling Stones. Unfortunately, Buddy is gradually made forget recording companies during the years 1970.

The years 1980

The years 1980, remembered by the New wave, return Buddy and all his/her comrades bluesmen in the most complete lapse of memory. Despite everything, it will try a return, but the artist seems broken down of inspiration, forsaking the feeling to misuse his dexterity to the 6 cords. Only its some appearances with his/her friend Junior Wells clear up this quite dark period: Buddy Guy and Junior Wells play the blues , Buddy Guy and the Juniors , Drinkin' TNT or Going back brought out in 1991 pennies the title Alone & acoustic .

The revival

In 1989, Buddy opens its club Legend in Chicago. To the beginning of the year 1990 pushed by a revival of the blues in the United States and in Europe, it leaves an album which starts again its career: Damn right, I' ve got the blues in company of Mark Knopfler, Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton. It just leaves after, in 1993, the album Slippin' in and plays side of young people bluesmen like Jonny Lang.

Buddy Guy is regarded today as a legend of the blues and a virtuoso of the guitar and regarded besides by Eric Clapton as the best guitarist in the world .
