Buddy Colette

Buddy Collette (born William Marcel Colette the August 6th 1921 with Los Angeles in California) is a saxophonist tenor, Flûtiste and Clarinettiste of Jazz.

It was especially distinguished in the music West coast, collaborating with the saxophonist Dexter Gordon, the Batteur Chico Hamilton as with that which remained all its life his/her friend, the Contrebassiste Charles Mingus.

Biography

Dice the 12 years age Collette learned the alto saxophone and directed its own group with Britt Woodman with the Trombone and Charles Mingus with the double bass. At 17 years, it began a professional carièrre. After having made its military service as leader of an orchestra of the navy, he played with the Stars off Swing ( Stars of the swing ) (of which also part Woodman, Mingus and Lucky Thompson made). With the saxophonist Dexter Gordon, the double bass player Charles Mingus and the beater Chico Hamilton, it contributed to maintain the bebop in the vicinity of Central Avenue , the historical avenue of Los Angeles.

In the years 1950 he worked as musician of studio; at that time he was the first musician Afro-américain to be occurred on television, in the emission of Groucho Marx You Study Bureau Your Life .

In 1955, he is cofounder of the legendary quintet of Chico Hamilton whose composition, rather original, included/understood the Guitariste Jim Hall the Violoncelliste (and pianist) Fred Katz. One year afterwards, Collette recorded Man off Many Parts , its first album as a leader.

Colette also taught. Among its pupils appeared Eric Dolphy, Charles Lloyd, Frank Morgan, Sony Criss and James Newton.

In 1996, the Bibliothèque of the Congress placed to Collette the order in a concert for big band, which would recall its career. Una brain attack in 1998 prevented it from continuing to play but Collette remained active in the field of artistic education. With Steven Louis Isoardi he wrote a titrated Autobiographie Jazz Generations: In Life in American Music and Society (Bayou 2000).

Colette was pioneer of the movement of the Civic right . Gerald Wilson, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, and the saxophonist Benny Carter were very quickly his supporters. He also contributed to the organization in a concert of protest to the repression of the government against the singer, actor and militant Afro-American Paul Robeson.
