Buck Danny

Buck Danny is a character of a Cartoon of the realistic type concerning three aviators, who appeared initially, in a weekly way, in the newspaper of Spirou.

History

During Years 1940, Victor Hubinon and Jean-Michel Charlier work separately for World Press, a Belgian agency directed by Georges Troisfontaines. This advised man proposes to them to join. The two men first of all sign the Anguish of Bismarck , an account of war published on the continuation of the Cuirassé Bismarck in Spirou, in 1946. In 1979 Victor Hubinon dies. After a few years of interruption, Buck Danny takes again service, animated this time by Francis Bergèse, and always scenarized by Jean-Michel Charlier. The illustrator carries out four adventures until in 1988. He begins then a new episode, stopped by the death of Charlier, in 1989. The famous aviator does not have despite everything step said his last word, and the scenario of the series is taken again, for an album by Jacques de Douhet, then is ensured by Bergèse itself.

In 2007, Francis Bergèse has announced that the 52ème ventures of Buck Danny, which will leave in February 2008, will be the last which it will carry out. No information was revealed on possible transferees.

The realism of the series

The series was always characterized by an extreme realism of the drawn flying equipments, revealing the outstanding innovations as soon as they were known: apparatus VTOL - on takeoff and vertical landing -, furtive planes, Russian apparatuses with Ground effect, etc the drafting of Spirou had fun some so much that it assembled one day a hoax where one saw Victor Hubinon challenged in his residence by the CIA wishing to know how he obtained such a precise documentation!

The ships and bases where the adventures are located are also taken in reality (American Porte-avions but also a Russian and a French drawn from reality, truths described American bases). Certain events were also taken again - when the monitoring of store for the youth of the time allowed it - as the Guerre of Korea or the Guerre of Bosnia. Heroes

At the beginning of the Second world war, Buck Danny engages in the US Navy and finds in the naval Aéronautique at the sides of Jerry Tumbler and Sony Tuckson, which becomes his/her inseparable friends. Together, they take part in good number of very risky operations to the four corners of the world and want to be the burning defenders of the spangled Bannière. At the time of a mission, these three friends meet Lady X, beautiful and perverse spy of high-flight, which works of independent and is essential consequently like their enemy “preferred”. In the years 1960, they control many prototypes of which the North American X-15. In the years 1980, a trilogy tells their fight against a plot wanting to start a nuclear Guerre. In 1996, in the orders of the phantom Flotilla, they take part in the conflict in Ex- Yugoslavia. Since, they were illustrated in Latin America while fighting against the drug trafficking and its implications in the political life of a country strongly resembling the Colombia. They also tested the last American hunter, the F-22, in North Korea, before returning to their preceding apparatus, F-18, in their last adventure in the Antarctic.

Buck Danny is obviously the character marking of the series to which it gives his name, as that whose rank goes up most quickly to the wire of the albums. In fact, it has been blocked with the rank of Colonel for several years, because promotion with the rank of General would give him a station out of a cockpit. Large, fair, athletic and fine young man, it represents the prototype of the fighter pilot in the imaginary collective. Sony Tuckson is on the contrary a kind of amusing development: originating in the Texas, it is him which makes all the blunders, and with him also which all small miseries arrive. It is found invariably affublé boyfriends more confusing, deformed and idiots the ones that the others, inevitable causes of catastrophes. It often makes blunders which to him are worth certain punishments on behalf of its superiors but Tumbler and Danny like to laugh with its costs. The dog (O' Connor) of the admiral, also makes some to him dribble. The character of Jerry Tumbler is marked less, and it seems a kind of brown and more unobtrusive double of fair Danny. The enemy one sworn, Lady X

The recurring enemy, whose Buck Danny and its friends in extremis manage to thwart the projects, is, in this series, a woman who is always made call Lady X ( Jane Hamilton at the registry office). She accumulates all the commonplaces of the kind, beautiful, mysterious, without scruples, she with tough resentment and she offers her services to highest offerer. It is a pilot out-par doubled of a spy. She worked for the Axe during the war (she was the mistress of a Japanese admiral). It is said that it is inspired by the character of Hanna Reitsch, have German aviation. It récurrement is believed disappeared but it remakes surface regularly whereas it was believed dead. Blonde at her beginnings in the series, it became brown and bronzed thereafter, but guard always her eyes " blue acier". She uses a cigarette-holder, object obliged of the " méchants". She is assisted of a large bacon, von Grodtz . She seems " in gripping " a little; for Buck Danny in the evolution of the character. It appears for the first time in the album Menace in North , before it gives its name to the following album.

Anecdotes

The albums treating of the Guerre of Korea were prohibited in France during some time.
