Buchelay

Buchelay is a small commune of France, located in the Yvelines, close to Mantes-the-Pretty to approximately sixty km in the west of Paris. This commune which is next to Mantes-the-Pretty belongs to the Communauté of agglomeration of Mantes in Yvelines.

The name of Buchelay would be a diminutive of thicket ( boschet as old French).

Geography

The territory of the commune of Buchelay occupies a zone of regular inclined slope towards north on the southern slope of the valley of the Seine, in the south-western periphery of the agglomeration mantoise. It is divided between rural areas (approximately 60%) devoted mainly to cereal agriculture and partially wooded (approximately 10%) and an urban space, built partly (approximately 30% of the communal territory).

This territory is parcelled out by several transport infrastructure: the highway of Normandy crosses it in its medium in the East-West direction, with the installations of an important turn pike as well as an half-exchanger. The commune is served by the secondary road D 110 which connects it to Bréval in the south-west and which is connected to the connection N13 - A13 which connects the RN 13 to the Filled Valley (Mantes-the-Pretty) in north with a13 highway, Paris direction like with RD 983 in the west (Magnanville).

Two railway lines also cross it, the Ligne Paris it Havre in the extreme North-West of the commune and the Ligne Paris-Cherbourg, directed north-eastern - south-west, crosses the highway in the center of the commune. However no station serves the commune directly. Two lines with high voltage follow the layout of the highway, slightly in the south of this one.

A Path of great excursion, the GR. 26 crosses the commune in its most raised part, close to the southern limit.

The habitat is mainly grouped in the southern part of the territory (in the south of the highway) around the increased old borough of several Lotissement S suburban. Important surfaces are devoted to industrial activities and commercial, of which a Auchan shopping mall and between the two railway lines, the zones of Closeaux, contiguous with Mantes-the-Pretty, gathering large surfaces and various artisanal activities. The north-eastern point of the commune is occupied by the railway installations of the Gare of Mantes-the-Pretty.

The commune of Buchelay is bordering on Mantes-the-City in the east, of Mantes-the-Pretty in north, the Rosny-on-Seine in the west and Saint-Illiers-the-City and Jouy-Mauvoisin in the south.

History

Culture

  • Saint-Sebastien Church: calcareous stone building covered of slate, built at the 15th century, largely restored in 1846. Square bell-tower with hexagonal arrow. Style neogothic.
