The wound with the eye
In 2000, whereas it carried the uniform of Leafs and disputed a match vis-a-vis Senators, the stick of Marian Hossa accidentally struck the right eye of Berard, wounding it seriously. In the room of hospital following the incident, one announces to him that it is likely to lose its eye. He declares nevertheless with his friends that he rejouerait one day with hockey. In spite of its optimism, it receives an allowance of 6,5 million dollars on behalf of its insurance company, which several regarded as being the sign of the end of its career.During the following season, it undergoes seven surgical operations with the eye which, miraculeusement, improved visual faculties of its wounded eye with 20/600. It took again the physical drive in April 2001 and started again to patinate a few months later. One gave him later a contact lens which enabled him to meet the minimum of 20/400 prescribed by the league.
When it became obvious that it would play hockey again, Leafs meant that they were always interested in its services. He chose however to play with a club in rebuilding which would be more close to its residence of Woonsocket. He signed a contract for one trial period at the Rangers of New York, turned over his premium of insurance and risked a return to the play in the LNH. Extremely fortunately, he played rather well so that its contract of test is transformed into one year old contract of a value of 2 million dollars.
He knew thereafter good one season stays at the Bruins of Boston and the Blackhawks of Chicago before signing with Blue Jackets at the beginning of the 2005-06. To reward it for its perseverance, he saw himself giving the Trophée Bill Masterton in 2004.
He signed with Islanders at the summer 2007.

He was the first player of the LNH to be tested positive with the steroids. The LNH did not impose any sanction to him, since the test had not been carried out by the league itself, but he was banished for one two years period of all international competitions, suspension coming into effect the January 3rd 2006. Berard was filled of remorse after the incident, admitting its error fully and swearing never not to start again.
