History

It is as from fourth century BC that Bruttiens appear in the point of the Italian peninsula, being émancipant of Lucaniens to which they were controlled and of which they accepted their name. Described like a bunch of any species fugitive slaves, wandering brigands with rough manners, they organize themselves gradually and make pressure on the coastal cities of the Grande Greece continental. Bruttiens dominate little by little part of the coast Tyrrhénienne, since Pœstum until Thurii over the edge of the Ionian Mer. According to Diodore of Sicily: “They took initially by storm the city of Urinated and plundered it, then they subjected Arponium, Thurium, and much of other cities, and established the same government everywhere.”

Bruttiens faced Alexandre Molosse, king of Épire, Agathocle, king of Sicily and fought the Romans at the sides of Pyrrhus. Subjected after the integration of Large Greece in the Roman bosom, Bruttiens were the first to make common cause with the Carthaginois at the time of the Second Punic War. Following the defeat of the troops of Hannibal, they were stated unworthy to be useful in the legions Roman and reduced servile functions of mails and to public messengers.
