Brutal death metal

The brutal death metal (or more simply “brutal death”) is a sub-genus of the Death metal appeared with the the United States with the beginning of the year 1990 with groups such as Suffocation.

Genesis

The first steps of this movement appeared at the end of the years 1980 with groups producing a music mixing the melody structure of the Grindcore and the brutality of the Death metal. It thus results from it a kind of death metal with a dimension “harsh” (rough, rèche) for the voices and even more radicalized on the strictly musical level. It was in particular the case of groups such as Napalm Death during its second time or Possessed of which the album Seven churches is the first where the song is truly Death grunt. However, brutal the death has also a visual dimension forming integral part of its characteristics. Extreme violence, films of series Z and especially the gore having strongly influenced certain groups. Most media of them is incontestably Cannibal Corpse even if the first true album of brutal death is Human waste of Suffocation, left in 1991.

Characteristics

Music

  • the first locatable characteristic with the first listening is the song of the type Death grunt which, very often shocks the listener not informed. This kind of song had indeed been popularized by Jeff Becarra of Possessed, but it is truly with Kam Lee of Death that it will be radicalized to the extreme (Kam Lee says to be inspired of the voices present in films gores such as Evil dead).
  • the guitars, as for them often function by tandem: the guitarist soloist producing the principal fronts and the rhythmic guitar emitting a kind of humming frantic. It arrives moreover rather often than one of the guitars under is granted of an octave.
  • the low guitar has here a role mainly rhythmic. The basic soli are almost non-existent and the bass players of brutal death often play on instruments with five cords (whose Warwick is a large manufacturer). All the bass players or almost play using a médiator (except notable for Alex Webster of Cannibal Corpse).
  • the battery also plays a key role. The battery varies slow tempos at truly frantic intervals. It is indeed in the death metal and a fortiori in brutal the death that one sees flowering the famous happy Blast S often carried out using a double gross case (and sometimes of one or two double pedals). The majority of the beaters reach without sorrow the 200 bpm.

Imagery

In brutal the death, the imagery forms integral part of the music. The sources of inspiration of the musicians are:
  • the cinema of series B and especially of series Z. They are these films with very small budgets whose bad more or less voluntary quality make of them works in extreme cases of the caricatural one.
  • the gore. It is under kind of the cinema of horror in which death and violence are shown explicitly.
This imagery, for some time tends to be radicalized and one finds images gores on many booklets of albums such as Butchered At Birth of Cannibal Corpse, Gorespattered commits suicide of Avulsed (one one sees of two subjects mimant a suicide) or Rock'n'roll' GORE of Vomited broth, an obscure Hungarian formation, which did not hesitate to show over the small pocket of the album the true photograph of a corpse decapitated at the time of an car accident.
