Brush-balloon on ice
The brush-balloon on ice , also called the balloon-brush (in English Broomball one ice or simply Broomball ), is a Sport récréationnel on ice originating in the Canada. He is played on a Patinoire of the same dimension than that used for the Hockey.
Two teams of six players (of which a guard) clash. The goal of the play is to mark more goals than its adversary. The goals are registered by striking the ball in the unfavourable nets by using its brush. The tactics and the play are similar to the hockey.
The players strike a small ball with a handle called the brush (fact either of wood, or out of aluminum) with the end of which a brush in triangular form is installed (following the example brush). The other characteristic lies in the fact that the players are not equipped with iceskates, but of shoes (as with the Curling).
Equipment
There is a whole variety of equipment which is used with the brush-balloon. Just like for the hockey, the players are invited to carry various protections in order to guarantee the long-term good performance of certain parts of the body judged more at the risk such as the Coude S, the Genou X and the parts intimate.
Usual equipment
Brush
The brush is the stick being used to play brush-balloon. Traditionally, it was about a brush domesticates whose hairs cold and were maintained in place by a plastic handle or cloth-lined adhesive tape, a technique which made it possible to harden them. Today still, this last approach of reinforcement is used in various competitions of balloon-brush. However, the brushes are henceforth manufactured out of wood or out of aluminum and their end is composed of a triangular plastic material of form adapted to the winter conditions.According to the international payments, the maximum length of a brush should not exceed 1,35 meter. There is however no minimum since this one depends on the morphology of each player. When this last is held nonchalamment on the spot by having the slackened arms, the brush should ideally reach at least the height of sound Nombril.
Balloon
With the balloon-brush, the balloon is spherical: its circumference is of approximately 20 centimetres. It is made of plastic of orange or blue color. The balloons oranges being made to play inside while the blue balloons are for outside.
Cage of goal
During a part, a cage of goal is placed on each side of the skating rink, so that the adversaries can try to mark points. The net is attached to the poles of the cage to prevent that the balloon does not pass through. In international competitions and the majority of the countries where the balloon-brush is practiced, the cage of goal measures 1,5 meter by 2,1 meters. With the the United States, dimensions are higher: one indeed prefers to use cages measuring 1,7 meter by 2,35 meters.
Basic equipment of the player
Shoes
The shoes of brush-balloon are designed especially to improve cohesion of the rubber soles on the surface of the ice. Many modern marks are now manufactured with characteristics like the improvement support the Orteil S and of the ankle S as well as the impermeability.
Helmet
The helmets are required, according to the international rules, for all the players. The latter can, in an adventitious way, to provide their grid with metal wire or with a hyaline plastic visor fixed at before covering their face.
Guards
The parts of protection intended for the shoulders and the chest are optional, but must correspond to the silhouette of the body when they are carried. For the women, additional plates can be added to the level of the centres. Guards are also threaded with the knees and the elbows, without forgetting the port of the shin guards, which effectively prevent the wounds at these places. They are usually made of a hard plastic or foam and must be dissimulated under the uniform raising the colors of the team.
Gloves
The gloves are commonly used to protect the Main S from the player. Often, they have an additional foam on the top to improve protection.
Cockle
Many male players carry a shell to protect their intimate parts. In a more familiar way, one uses the English term jockstrap , that one can translate by suspending rod .
Equipment of the goalkeepers
The guards generally carry a grid covering all their face, by adding the guards leg, glutei and pectoral as well as the shoulder pads. They have right to use a particular glove of rectangular form ( blocker , in English) to stop the shootings, similar to that of the hockeyeurs.
Manner of playing
A typical part of brush-balloon is separate in two periods. Each team consists of a guard and five other players, among whom one frequently finds two defenders and three attackers (two wingers and a center). If the surface of the ice is particularly small, sometimes one chooses to put less players on the skating rink. The objective of the play is to mark points with an aim of the opposing team: the team which counts the most points during the part gains the match. In certain tournaments, if the pointing indicates a null part, one additional period is played to determine the winner.
Arbitration
The parts of brush-balloon are controlled by two referees which are present on the surface of play. These two people have equal rights to decide penalties, off-sides, goals, etc There are also referees external with the play, their number depend on the level which the part is played. One finds in particular people who have as a task to post the score, remaining time at the period, the duration of the penalties, but also of people who deal with judging validity of the marked points. The referees are generally vêtus of a jersey lined vertically of white bands and black bands and carry a scarlet stringcourse on an arm. They will use this same arm coloured to announce the penalties during the part.
History
Until now, there does not exist complete and precise history about the brush-balloon. However, the modern consensus wants that it is originating in Canada and that it had been born from a simple experimentation of part of hockey not requiring the wearing of shoes. Nevertheless, a recent research indicates that a sport similar to the balloon-brush was known under the name of Knattleikr and was played in Iceland at the 18th century. This sport was almost regarded as a war, with occasional deaths, since a part could imply whole villages up to 14 days. The writer Hord Grimkellson deferred, during a part between Strand and Botn, that before the twilight, six of the players of Strand lay on the ground whereas none on the side of Botn had undergone similar atrocities. The first parts of brush-balloon recorded in North America were it in Saskatchewan, 1909, and Ontario, 1911, although obviousnesses make it possible to believe that the balloon-brush was practiced as of the years 1890. The sport spread Canada towards the the United States, becoming especially popular with the Minnesota where, in the Années 1960, a community of balloon-brush increased.
In the decades which followed and in the years 1980, the brush-balloon was popularized with the international scales. Parts were organized in Australia, with the Japan, in Sweden, Italy, Germany.

The Great Britain joint it also with the movement with its annual tournament played Broadgate Ice Is centered with London, characterized by the presence of talented North-American players and the cream of the British players. Other countries practice the balloon-brush, like the Finland, the Germany and the Russia.
Variations
There exist three base forms with the brush-balloon: male teams, female teams and mixed teams. Each male or female team can choose to take part in categories where the contact is tolerated or not. The majority of the world competitions in this kind of team are based on the same rules of contact as to the hockey. The United States prefers, as for them, the lack of contact.
The mixed brush-balloon implies matches between teams which comprise an equal number of males and females on the ice. By nature, one does not find a contact in these parts.
The Michigan Tech University, the brush-balloon is played on small external skating rinks. The special equipment is not allowed, just like the shoes which allow an additional traction. Moreover, the brushes are made with the traditional roughcast hairs in yellow straw.
Future of the brush-balloon
The brush-balloon continues to take expansion. In addition, because of re-elected sport in Canada, in the United States like in other countries, the IFBA now speaks to bring the brush-balloon on ice to the Winter Olympics. The Canadian Fédération of balloon-brush is a member of the Canadian committee Olympique and other federations are awaited for soon. Universities as Michigan Tech engages in the balloon-brush, become for them an extremely popular tradition (1400 students of the Michigan Technological University take part in this sport). The future of this sport seems promising. Labelled as being “the alternative sport of team on ice”, the balloon-brush offers an option less brutal than hockey to the players. On the level elite, the brush-balloon is a very fast sport which requires good manual skills, which gives an excellent spectacle. At the more entertaining level, the balloon-brush on ice can be pleasant for all the players, independently of their aptitudes.
