Brumath

Brumath is a common French, located in the department of the the Low-Rhine and the area Alsace.

Its inhabitants is called Brumathois.

Geography

Brumath is on the Trunk road 63 to 17 km in the north of Strasbourg and to 13 km in the south of Haguenau. It is also served by the Autoroute A4 which circumvents it by the west.

The Zorn crosses the city and the Canal of the Marne to the Rhine the longe by south-west.

Heraldic

Blasonnement is the following: of mouths to the branch of sinople oak bent englantée of four gold coins .

History

Brumath has belonged to some rare sites of Alsace which were inhabited and attended, without interruption, for more than five thousand years. Capital of the Gallic tribe of the Triboques, the city became, at the time Gallo-Roman, a place of thermal baths famous of the name of Brocomagus .

At the 13th century, Brumath became the capital of the landgraviat of Low-Alsace then was set up with the row of city at the 14th century. Divided between the Lichtenberg and the Linange , the seigniory was the object of ceaseless wars between these two families.

Places and monuments

  • archaeological Museum with the basement of the castle become Protestant church in 1804.

  • Organ of the Protestant church: built in 1810 per Michel Stiehr and classified historic building in 1973.
  • Synagog: The first synagog was built in 1801, the current synagog in 1846. Brumath is seat of rabbinate as of the 19th century. Damaged and profaned under the Occupation, it was transformed into deposit of vivres; it will be returned to the worship in 1957.
